Repair Manuals

Hello All,

I have a 1947 Oldsmobile 68 series. it's a straight 8 with hydramatic drive. I am looking for a good shop manual that has good all around info (timing, dwell, electrical schematics etc.) I seen one on rockauto, and fusick. I'm just not sure what you guys have had better luck with. I'm not sure if I can add multiple questions to this post but a will go ahead and add them here for now. if I need to ask them somewhere else, please let me know.

My car doesn't have turn signals, no stalk, no flasher, no wiring. did these cars not come with turn signals or am I missing something? Can I add provisions for turn signals? it is still a 6 volt system.
Being that this is still a 6 volt system how do I go about fixing any wiring issues? what gauge of wire should i use for items like battery cables? what gauge do I use for other wiring repairs?
I was going to time it over the weekend but didn't see any timing marks on the crank pully. I quickly looked it up and could only find timing for a 41 (mine is a 47) I am assuming it's the same but just wanted to double check if it's done the same way.

I am sure I am going to have a bunch of questions as time goes on with this car. I do apologize for all the questions in this post. Any help/advise is very much appreciate.

Thank you,

Jake

Jake, welcome to the site. If you're going to order manuals I'd buy them from Fusick over RockAuto.

If the wiring in your Oldsmobile is torn up or just deteriorated from age, you can always get a 6V harness from aftermarket suppliers. Don't forget that 6V systems are going to use larger gauge wire than a 12V system.

Be aware that the new manual that you'll be buying is a very poor quality.
It is actually photocopies of the original and the pictures are very very bad.
You cannot see any details and I found it very annoying.
I'm not a mechanic, and I need to understand and see what I'll dealing with.
I cannot say that the new version really help understanding.

My best advice will be the following:
Buy a CD version for quick researches and general understanding of what you're looking at.
It really help to be able to search on your computer.
Then, buy a used original printed shop manual to get into the visual and the details.
There is a world of quality between them.

Hi, I´m restoring a 1948 Olds Model 66 Sedan and I´m using manuals from Fusick for Oldsmobile 1942-1948 + 1 for fisher bodies from this period; I´m very happy with the detailing and I´m not a mechanic as well; e.g. looking on the steering and suspension details I reworked every single piece of it and with the description + photos I could reassamble all of it! As in the all the manuals the photos could be always more but by reading the text and take your time to understand all it will work for sure.

Oldsmobile issued a complete service manual in 1942.
And then issued supplements for 1946,1947 & 1948
You will need both.
Fisher Body also issued a book to cover the body.
Original copies are best. Available on E-Bay.

Hi Jake,

Those cars did not came with turn signals, but as my 48 says, it can be ordered as an option. Not sure about your year so.

I’m working in my car for 3 years now, so keep posting what you work.
