I've got a friend that has a 55 Olds 88 convertible that's in the process of mechanical restoration. I might do the brakes on it since I just did mine last month. He might want to replace the front spindle and rear axle bearings at the same time. Does anyone know of roller bearings that replace the stock front and rear ball bearings?

 

I know the tri5 Chevies have sets available but don't know if the same sets fit an Olds.

 

The tri five Chevy world has made taper bearings to replace the ball bearings --- I personally have no idea which outfit (I guess try Danchucks first...)'did that -- and how pricey they are...
I would also bet they probably made it next to the Wuhan market.... If you know what I mean.
Your outer is the same as the 1956 - 1957 Chevy (the 909067) NOT the 1955 (the 909041)
The Inner is VERY different than the Chevy -- and NO ONE has done that one....

If you want to make it less complicated, and GLORIOUS......
I have N.O.S. U.S.A. made Inner & Outer Wheel Bearings... And N.O.S. U.S.A. made Front Wheel Seals with nice soft, supple felt !!!!!

Timkin bearing replacement is available for the outer bearings but I believe that there is an Timken bearing that would work but would require an inner race to be manufactured to work on the Oldsmobile. No one seems interested in taking this project on that I know of.

 

Most have run for 60+ years with the originals, if you get 60 more years or so out of a new set of tapered bearings your ancestors will be impressed. Tapered bearings are better no doubt but do you think you will wear out a new set before you wear out..... Tedd

 

I am with you on this one Tedd (as usual). The other thing is the ball bearings in the car were probably made in the USA while any replacement roller bearing (if they were available) are no doubt made in China. Your friend is probably going to drive the car a lot less each year than it was driven 60 years ago. I still have the ball bearings in my 54 with no problems.

 

You are correct . They were made by New Departure in Bristol , Conn .
