1956 Starfire Exhaust

Anyone have any pictures of a factory exhaust setup around the back bumper especially for a 1956 Starfire with dual exhaust? I think the exhaust pipe has a 8-10 inch extension that bolts to the special tip and bracket at the end of the exhaust pipe. Is that true or does the exhaust pipe just come all the way back to that bumper bracket?

Thanks
Mike

Hi Mike. If you're talking about the chrome tips that are attached to the bumper, like these, they are ornaments and the exhaust does not go through them.

If you're looking for the actual routing of the original exhaust, I can't help you since my dual exhaust was modified when it was replaced in 2002.

Just from memory but didn't the exhaust dump out short of the chrome trumpets like your replacements do. Seems as I remember that they did but I'm old and forgetful.....Tedd

That's a common contemptable practice still used today on even luxury new cars. The real pipe curves downwards, just in front of the fakes

In your Old's case, the pipes are 1955 issues:

Thanks guys. I wasn't sure how or even if the pipes connect to the deflector or turn down right at them. My first 50's car after years of A bodies.

So as usual I'm confused ( it's easy to do ) most of what I've seen or read indicates as Frank did that the exhaust tips are ornaments only
however the other day I saw a video which of course I can now not find where the owner of a 1956 Olds 98 went out of his way to boast that his vehicle had the factory functional dual exhaust tips and the video included a undercarriage shot of the dual exhaust hooked directly to the tips with very factory looking brackets and plate under the tips.
For what its worth Fusic does sell them and list them only as ornaments, the previous owner of my Olds had rectangular tips installed but I don't like them.

to big and distracting, some time in the near future I plan on having them replaced with smaller simple downturned chrome tips.

I can assure you they were designed as ornaments, with a welded black metal plate on the back:

Having said that, remember that people have had 64 years to customize 1956 Oldsmobiles. Some nut even put LED lights in his hood ornament

Wouldn't be hard to take off the black plate and route the exhaust pipe through the chrome tip.

And if you are looking for duals on a 55 they didn't come with them. If you have them they were added later.... Tedd

I'm one of those nuts who put LED's into my '57 fender ornaments and exhaust ornaments.

Here is what I have on my 54. They are actually repro's of mid 50's Mopar products. You may like them or hate them and that is okay. Frank you are correct in that we need pictures as proof. I couldn't find mine since they are not in my 54 Olds folder. Here is a link to the exhaust tips. These actually are deflectors that attach to the tailpipe. I like that since it keeps the exhaust off the bumper guards which will keep them from rusting.

We may have beaten this subject to death, but I found this brochure today relating to the 1956 dual exhaust that may (or may not) be interesting. Oldsmobile Dealerships were not equipped to handle the "new" dual exhaust systems that were introduced in 1956. So Kent-Moore- a leading supplier of garage equipment- made an adapter to connect both pipes to the "exhaust eliminating systems". See where is goes under the bumper:
