1962 Starfire Exhaust Question
1962 Starfire Exhaust Question
Is it true that the original Starfire exhaust system was 2"diameter on the left side and partial 2,5" on the right side?
How many mufflers been there original, 2 or 4?
Did anybody try to build a more efficient exhaust system on a similar car? I know it's difficult due clearing issues:-/

Can't speak for the exact pipe sizes on a 62, but that's the way a 64 is set up. The RH dual was sized 2.5 so the part could be common between single/dual exhaust cars. Not sure why they dropped the LH to 2", but Olds had a habit of overengineering a lot of their mechanical systems.
A 62 or 63 would originally have had a low restriction muffler at the front and a resonator at the rear for noise control. I'm told the originals were steel-packed.
1964 and part-year 65 introduced the chambered pipe to the American car industry. The exhaust pipes had a chambered section, then a front resonator (exclusive to Starfire/Jetstar I), then a rear resonator (common to all cars). The chambered exhaust was discontinued mid 1965 though the Starfire retained its unique side exit exhaust.
1966 used the same exhaust as other dual exhaust B bodies.
Next, define efficient. Try to remember Oldsmobile had the best engineering staff in GM in those years, and was generally considered second only to Chrysler in the industry.

Hmm, ok. What i found under the car seems to be mostly the stock exhaust, looked for me like someone took what he had left on pipes and put them together, but seems to be original, huh. I'm pretty sure they did it back than due to clearance issues not for performance sake. There are two dents in the left pipe right under the manofold to clear the starter and steering box.
My basical thought is that this engine has so
Much potential thats waisted, the dents in the pipe are reducing the inmy eyes to small pipe diameter even more. Sure the small pipes are good for low end power but i think a better breathing exhaust,a good dual plane intake(i don' t know about any, only aftermarket intakes are 3x2 or 4x2 and non of em seem to help to find more power) and a hotter cam wouldn't hurt. Result would be a more powerfull engine with more milage, too. That's what i did with most of my former cars. I'm new to the oldsmobiles though so i don't have much experiance and hope sombody that does might chime in.
Possibly the use of a mini starter would make room for a bigger pipe on the left side or a stater change over adapter to place it in the other side.
I don't see that any engine benefits of unequal exhaust pipes
