TH400 Dual Gate stays in drive

Good Morning. I just went out to move the 1970 442 over in the garage and my Hurst dual gate will not go into reverse or neutral. It seems to be stuck in drive. I moved the car a couple of days ago and it was fine. What could be the problem?

When you say "won't go into reverse", do you mean the shifter physically won't move to that position, or that the trans doesn't engage reverse with the shifter in R? If the shifter won't move, the cable has gone bad. If the trans doesn't engage, that's likely an internal problem.

Thanks Joe,

The shifter moves up and down through all gates and the tranny seemed to work fine on News Year Day when I moved the car. Today I got it started, backed it out of the garage and moved it over to the other side. When I went to put it in park, nothing happened. It was still in drive. I had to just turn off the engine. Tom

Oh, OK. That just sounds like the cable has come loose at one end or the other. Start by looking at the shift arm on the trans while someone moves the shifter. If the cable's not connected, that's easy. If it is connected but doesn't move, you'll need to remove the console and look at the connection on the shifter.

Excellent Joe,

I will take a look at the cable this afternoon when my daughter comes over. Thank you for the help. Tom
