Any suggestionson next course of action

Speedo quit working. The cable has some dirt and grit in it but I can turn the cable manually and get it to register on the speedometer. So I replaced the gear and still doesn't work. From what I can see from the outside the gear in the transmission looks good and feels like the teeth aren't stripped.

Before I take car in and spend the money to have the gear replaced in the transmission is there something else I should be checking first that would be causing this? Speedo was working when I fist got the car.

sounds like the gear drive in the tranny may have went out.

As noted, sounds like the speedo drive gear. Before paying to have this gear replaced, however, be sure to replace the speedo cable and sheath. Any "grit" or friction will just destroy the new gear also.

Do you know length of cable needed? There seems to be numerous lengths of cable. I'm away from Car right now and can't pull out the old cable to measure.
