I gambled once. Driving cross-country, stopped for gas in Reno at about 02:00.
They had liquor and a slot machine in the gas station, so, to celebrate being in Nevada, I bought a pint of Wild turkey, had a swig, and dropped a quarter in the slot machine.
Now I can say I've done that.

Made it home safe and sound. The car performed flawlessly after the oil change and some EOS (engine oil supplement) recommended by a GM dealer. No more clatter after that.
1000+ miles, quite a good shakedown trip if I do say so myself.

I think the best part was all the people I met because of the Olds. Everywhere we went people wanted to chat about it. I even had two people ask if I was interested in selling.
It was a great week

 

Mac I gotta say you are a better man than me. Im still shy to take my pops car for its maiden voyage. Gonna get to it this weekend but I gotta say its been a great thread to follow from start to finish so far atleast . Love the pic car looks great.

Well to be honest, the drive itself was exhausting. "What's that smell?! Do you here that noise?!". But that will subside as I gain more confidence in my work. And getting the suspension tightened up will help too. The steering is straight and true and doesn't pull or wander but going over curvy hills that weren't terribly smooth....well I just didn't feel in control, ya know? Body roll maybe? So shocks, ball joints, tie rods, bushings, maybe a thicker sway bar.

Yeah, I didn't even let them get to the money part. I cut them off quick, lol.

It was just called GM EOS Assembly Lubricant. Mine came in a pint not a quart.

We had fun at the casino but I'm more of a newb to gambling than I was to car restoration at the beginning of this thread. And there was no manual! I was completely lost. I wanted to play poker but I think the buy-in was $300. Yeah, no.

 

mac next time you are close by we can hit up the casino its 2 blocks from my house lol. 5 dollar blackjack tables cant go wrong there lol. You should try to come up for the Byron bop race. Hopefully I got my crap set up and ready to go.

39 to 72 then just take it east . 72 becomes 20 and I live 3 blocks north of rt 20.

Its 2 1/4 pipe, I will have to get some long tube Headers now and then go to 2 1/2 after I get the new motor thou.

Fingers crossed for a good year. I love teaching but the BS can get pretty deep if I let it. I've already had three emails asking for my "volunteer" services. There is a definite advantage to having a punch-clock job, lol. But I'm ready to get back in the classroom

I'm going to go for the 455, I haven't had time to speak to Mark as of yet, He did mention the advantages and disadvantages, I'm kinda concerned with the U.S exchange and shipping at the moment, I haven't nailed down a price for that yet. Things are a little cheaper up here rite now so I'm going to give it a few more weeks and see what the values will be . I'm hung up on if their happens to be a problem after I get it here more than anything rite now we are all human and things can go wrong..... but I just haven't spoke with Mark about this. I read your post and seen that it took a couple dyno's to get your engine dialed in so this has me a little concerned. Its alot of coin so I just want to make the rite decision ya know.

 

That's why Mark is the man, he didn't ship out until it was right. Not having to worry about it is worth every penny.

Absolutely I have heard many good things about Mark!!! I guess I'm over thinking the whole deal. You always get what you pay for in life without a doubt I guess a couple grand difference isn't a killer I just have to convince my wife. She made me get a couple prices up here lol. Mark dealt me a good hand. The cam he ground for me seems tip-top. But I'm confused 76, I thought you were getting a 455 core and building it yourself.

 

Lol , Oh no I haven't the slightest idea on the internals of an engine nor the time, I was going to tinker with the 350 that is in the car after I drop in another. I may digitise a few things and play around with machining some things at times but no I won't be building it myself.

 

Aww come on man, if I can do it, anyone can! But then again, you have to have the time...and the tools....a place to do it.....and probably no small children. So yeah, you're making the right move

 

Just finished my marathon read of this thread. Thank you for the detailed pictures and descriptions of your trials and tribulations! It's really a service to the Olds community. I referenced it more than a few times myself on my recent project.

Maybe I missed it, but what did you do about the front timing cover seal leak?

 

Hey SkylinesSuck (great handle, btw. Country boy myself), thanks for the kind words. It's nice to know that the thread is still helping folks out.
It might be important to note/update here that the new camshaft had a slightly smaller base circle and was giving me some valve train noise. I ended up swapping in the roller tip rockers from Comp Cams and longer pushrods. There's a thread about it around here somewhere.
AS far as the front seal leak; it was either the power steering pump or it went away on it's own. The only leak I have now is a small one from the trans speedo cable housing. I replaced the seals but it still leaks. Not much though. 2k miles and I haven't had to add any.
Nice '75 you got there. My first was a '75 (I think), blue with the white vinyl and white interior. That was a smooth riding automobile.

 

Thanks! Don't know if you noticed, but I'm actually in Japan and I've owned a Skyline before. Man, the ricers back home would freak out about it. Way more than they should have. I like them but you can give me classic American muscle any day. I brought this one (it was my grandfather's) with me this time here in Okinawa.

I'm going to hunt for your thread about the roller tip rockers. It's something I'm interested in doing not too far down the road, but first I need to get it back ON the road and running. Glad to hear the leak went away. I hope any future leaks I have will do the same.

The stock mount seemed a little...weak.

 

Looks a little soft.

Please let us know whether you can feel the stiffer polyurethane mount.

Define "feel". So far all I've noticed is that the shifts are a little quicker and it was starting to have a little shudder on launch (which is why I stopped putting it off). Otherwise I haven't felt anything different/annoying. Other than the fact that the trans is on it's way out/overheating

 

I've never noticed a real difference in the poly trans mount either.

 

Good. The Poly mounts are stiffer than the rubber, and the question everyone will want answered is do you feel any harshness or vibration that you didn't feel before.
