Oh, hmm, anywhere from 50 to 105. Simplifies things, doesn't it? This week the highs are in the low 70s, next week it jumps to the mid 90s.

Hey, I solved my hesitation. Well, most of it anyway. The secondary air doors were adjusted too loose. I should have tightened them just a bit more but I misplaced that particular allen wrench.

Hitting the road today. Heading down to Staunton Il to Country Classic Cars (just for kicks), over to Missouri to see my mom, then on to who knows where. We only have six days so we won't get too far. Wish us luck

We're in Hannibal tonight. It was good seeing me mum. Country Classic Cars was fun. It's funny watching the wife "get the fever". She still wants the 65 Jetstar. I have to admit it's a nice car. 42k actual miles, very clean body, white with immaculate red interior. But it's a four door. Took several pictures of Oldsmobiles, will upload those later. One was a very nice '68 442 but it turned out to be a clone.
The car ran great....until just outside Hannibal. It started surging and we could both here a very loud clicking coming from the engine. I pulled over and it went away. Got back out on the road (gently) but it never came back. It sounded like maybe a lifter was sticking? So the question now is; head back out on the road or get it to a garage on Monday. I'm leaning towards the garage. Mary is cool with that too. We'll sleep on it but it's not spoiling our trip. I've never embarked on this level of engine work and we both knew this was a possibility. I wouldn't mind a few opinions though. Yeah....wish I would have sprung for the gauges. But the oil is full and clean looking at least.
Oh, mileage...ran the air until the belt broke (had it too tight maybe?), running about 70 when i drove, 75 when it was Mary, 13.9 mpg. Not bad, not great. But again, other than the tappet noise, she ran great

Yeah, we're not freaking out about it. Still having a good time. But I would like to avoid a $300-$400 tow and a bus ride home. We're going to drive around Hannibal to day, maybe take her out on the interstate a bit and see how she fares.

Just keep monitoring it. If you want to spring for an oil pressure gauge, it will take 15 minutes to hook it up. Basically one plastic line routed to the inside of the car and a fitting at the gauge and the front of the block.

Thanks guys. We've been driving around town all day without a hickup. Oh, other than the compressor went belly up so it'll be a warmer trip than we planned but no biggie.
I might pick up an oil gauge tomorrow but right now we're late for a boat
Where on the block do I tap the fitting?

At the front on the DS. Remove the Oil Pressure Sensor and screw in the gauge fitting.

You can also buy the T fitting so you can use the oil sensor for the oil light

Same place where the idiot light sender goes - if you want both, you need to use a T fitting.

I'll have to use a T fitting. That's where I have the electric choke hooked up.

Unfortunately, we missed the boat. Quite literally. But there's another tomorrow.

This is me and the other woman in front of my Mom's house. Well, sort of my Mom's house. When the last of us kids moved out, the folks said "Yes! We're outta here!" and moved to Hannibal to become caretakers of this, the Rockcliff Mansion. Mom's 86 now and she still gives tours 4 days a week, climbing three flights of stairs several times a day.

Damn, cool place and love the old architecture.

On the oil pressure gauge, you can screw it in and run the line. Disconnect the choke for now, then fix it right when you get home.

Heading down to Cape Garardeau in the morning. Mary has a brother there. Might do a little gambling. I mean, might lose a little money

Yes, simply remove the oil sending unit and install the new gauge fitting.

Okay, just to be clear; I replaced the original sending until with the PS64 switch and hooked up my electric choke as per this thread:

https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...ke-wiring.html

I think it wouldn't be too much more trouble to just use a T fitting and hook both up so I can still have my choke. Is the T a part store find or hardware store? And will I need pipe dope or is it a dry hookup?

Hardware store. And you'll need some sort of sealant, teflon tape is fine, thread sealer like I had posted before should be fine, too.

Or you could just run without the choke - Slow warmup on hot summer days on a roadtrip is minimal to nonexistent problem anyway.

Okay, now I'm understanding. Thanks Eric. Now, will I need sealant if I'm threading the gauge fitting straight into the block? I don't think I used any on the sending unit.

It's pipe thread, in most cases you don't need thread sealant with them. It doesn't hurt though.

I'll give an X2 to that! Thanks everyone.

I had the oil pressure tested. 20 psi at low idle, 35 off idle. He said it was a little higher than specs but okay.
We went ahead and drove down here to Cape Girardeau and she ran great. But yet again, pulling into town it was clack clack clack at the first stop sign. Gave it a little gas and it stopped.
We're here visiting Mary's brother and he has a good friend that builds stock cars so we're going to see him in the morning. But for tonight, we're hitting the casino I've never gambled more than a lottery ticket or quarter poker so this should be fun....for about 20 minutes until I lose my allowance.

Huh, I did that today and it seemed to work so far. Had to go to a speedy-lube like place and they guessed at the filter and it belched oil all over (I killed it after maybe 3 seconds). I changed from 10w40 to 10w30 (bottled, Gastro I think) and of course added some zinc.
Spending another day in the Cape and then off to home. Won $25 playing craps last night in the first five minutes.....and then lost it in the next 30. Broke even at least

Update:
Got the gauges hooked up and everything looks good. Temp running up and down these Missouri hills is steady at 185, 190 idling (85 degree day). Pressure idling is 20 lbs, 40 running about 55-60mph (warmed up of course).
Had the oil changes and so far no clatter.
The brakes got a GOOD work out too, hills hills, hills. One has a slight squeak squeak squeak when applied but they stop the car just fine.
NEXT on the list for me is suspension. The wife and her brother aren't exactly petite people and with both of them in the car I was scraping the pipes a little and bottoming out the shocks occasionally. Plus, taking a Missouri curve, on top of a hill, at 55 has a high sphincter factor for me.

Now for a couple pics:

The Trail of Tears....

[IMG][/IMG]

The Mighty Mississip....

[IMG][/IMG]

A little more gambling tonight then it's homeward bound in the morning.

Your temps and oil pressure are fine. Possibly time for a new set of shocks. Love the stance, no longer looks like a grandma car.
