Olds 358 Build
My car isn't set up the best for the track, which is now 4 hours away. A built 2004R and 3.91 gears would be a much better combo for that, not happening. These heads were a whole thing to figure out. It is a good thing I had multiple primary jets and secondary hangers around. I have never needed such lean secondary rods. Timing is different too, much more finicky. Get a set in your shop Dale and give us your honest thoughts. My car is simple, I like that a lot, time to go cruising.
you also don’t need to drive 4 hours to a track. The Dragy app is free so you can download it and go testing on an empty country road today. It’s also the best way to test your tuning changes
are you afraid of what you might find out? you claim it’s 400hp or more…prove it to yourself. another thing,, having 16” in park is probably going to be 14” or 15” in gear. that little 218/218 cam should do better than that. your signal to the carb is weak, especially with a dual plane. What power piston spring are you running?
have you even tested the pp spring to know at what vac it begins to open and when it’s full open?

I really don't care if it has 400 HP at this point, it does feel faster than the iron heads especially in the higher rpms. The draggy app might be worth trying though, give some sort of baseline. I also thought it might have more than 16" at 1000 rpm in park. Pretty sure my last 214/214 custom flat tappet from Mark had the same 16" of vacuum. It was 13 or 14" in gear, I believe. It is the orange power piston spring Cliff Ruggles sells. Supposedly down at 7" and up at 5", the spring Cliff recommended. I probably could have gone a bit stiffer. Oh and the timing is at 33 revved to 3600 rpm ish, in before that and doesn't want much more WOT. It was pretty pleasant to drive this morning with a working fast idle. Just putting around in second, leaves stops no problem. It is kind of perfect with all the park and school zones.

I was never a fan of 400 to 500 rpm in gear, so I always set it up. It will idle at 500 rpm, was doing it cold after a minute of warm up when the fast idle was malfunctioning. Yeah 650 to 700 rpm would be about right in gear, varies a couple of rpm.
