Oil Filter for 72 350

Does anyone still make a full size (diameter) oil filter for an Olds V8? What brand and number have you used to interchange with the PF30? I have no confidence that these skinny little filters, the size on my John Deere, can properly filter the oil in a V8.

I found the NAPA 1258 or 21258 and the WIX 51258 are both the 3.66 diameter, not that skinny (about 2 7/8 diameter) of the Purolators that the parts stores near me sell.

I just bought a Napa Gold 1258. I usually go with the cheaper but equal quality and size LF222 Hastings oil filter but they were out.

WIX 51049/NAPA 1049 is the large Oldsmobile filter. This is what I use.

More info than you probably need...

WIX 51258 (4.338" height, principal application is 67-80)
WIX51049 (5.178" height, principal application is 59-67) Both are nearly identical, the 51049 being slightly larger. Both are rated at 21 nominal microns.

Baldwin B39 or B9, B9 being the larger version similar to the WIX51049. Its rated at 18 nominal microns.

IMO All other filters inferior or overpriced.

Why not use the good old AC PF24? Just got one from Oriley last week and was even made in the USA. It's the large body as well.

Are you SURE it's made in the US? The AC filters I've found have been made in Mexico or elsewhere for at least the last five years. The construction quality dropped considerably on those units. I used to use AC exclusively until I compared one of those newer filters to an old one. The metal on the top plate is about half the thickness, and overall quality is awful.

Yeah it was printed right on the filter. Didn't seem any lighter either. I just ordered another one, I can post pics of it in a few hours once I'm off work!

Disagree on the Hastings filter, US made, I have cut one open , well made and I can get it for $3.00 cheaper than the Napa.

The filters you mentioned are all very good, Hastings was not on that list, therefore inferior.

Well if it was produced here you'd think it was made here. I see your point though. I think if it was made in the US with imported components it'd have to say "assembled in USA from US and foreign components" like is seen on a lot of stuff these days. I know it's hard to convey in a pic but the paint doesn't feel like that cheap Chinese paint.

They are included in this discussion. Good point and well said thou...Baldwin bought Hastings in 1995 so one in the same. Like NAPA and WIX. Baldwin/Hastings is a higher quality commercial/fleet filter.

Donaldson and K&N can be included here as well...air filters.

I'm skeptical because it doesn't say made in USA it says product of USA not produced, product. Very precise wording that to me means sold in the USA but could be interpreted as it was made in the USA. In today's cost saving efficiency oriented manufacturing the word "made" uses almost 50% less ink than the word "product". Plus the vernacular is made in USA not product of USA so why change from standard terminology to say the same thing. The assembled in USA is exactly the kind of thing I'm getting at. I'm not giving you a hard time I'd like to believe it's made in USA but so many companies engage in misleading the consumer it's Difficult to discern what's actually accurate.

If I was comparing two similar products and one said USA and one said China I would just get the USA one as well.

When choosing on rockauto I frequently select the AC delco professional products as well...the last thing I got was rotors...made in China . They do appear to be decent quality tho.

Baldwin

I typically use the WIX or equivalent Napa Gold filter but I noticed that nobody has mentioned the Baldwin filter which is also good.

You are right, I forgot Baldwin owns Hastings. Oil filters have become retardedly expensive up here, the Hastings is one of the few under $10, last Baldwin was similar priced.

I wondered about this, too. I have an ACDelco PF61 oil filter in the box sitting on my workbench, and it says "Product of USA" on both the box and the filter itself just like shown above by DJS70cutlass. I did a little googling around, and there are a number of sites and articles that address "Made in USA," "Product of USA", "Assembled in USA," etc.

Here's one from the American Manufacturer's Association.

http://www.ama50.com/american-manufa...bels-standards

The phrase "Made in USA" is regulated by the Federal Trade Commission and can only be used if certain standards are met. From what I can glean, "Product of USA" means the same thing. "Assembled in USA" and similar wording, of course, means only that the part was assembled here but was made from imported parts.

Here's the FTC's own page on the issue.

https://www.ftc.gov/tips-advice/busi...e-usa-standard

The bottom line is that I'm confident that my filter was made in the U.S.

I have a commercial fleet filter/oil supply company here with a corporate discount. So I pick the Baldwins when I am in that neighborhood. 6 bux or so. I use them for oil analysis too as they sell the kits. They also sell Schaeffer oil products. I'll go for the WIX if I'm on that side of town. I'm lucky as I have 3-4 non-big box parts joints here.

Thanks for the replies. Seems the 1258 numbers across many of the lines is the right number.

To clarify, 1049/51049 will fit in place of 1258 and it is a physically larger filter with more media area. It will not fit on the 307 motors that use the small filter, however. Well, it actually will spin on, but it rubs on the trans cooler lines.

I recall about a year ago, Car and Driver magazine was track testing a Corvette and experienced an engine failure, that was, in some way, attributed to the OEM oil filter. Since reading that, I will not use an AC filter- only Wix.
