Carb Numbers

Carb Numbers

I have 2 1970 350 carbs, and was wondering what the numbers and letters meant. I'm guessing date? I know the 7040250, its the other letters and numbers i'm inquiring about.

1- 7040250 NF 3009
2- 7040250 NF 1190

The first 3 numbers are the day of the year, and the last number is the year. Your first one is a 69 and the second a 70.

It's the assembly plant, but I don't know which one that is.

NF is the broadcast/application code.

350 4-bbl auto (with or w/o AC)

NF is the production line code for the carburetor.


1970 Oldsmobile Assembly Manual, Page 6-28

The guys on the assembly line couldn't be expected to remember or identify every detail of every part, so parts that could be bolted on, such as springs, shocks, pulleys, and carbs needed to have two-letter codes to make it easy to find the right ones.

The letters stamped into the carb. body made it easy for the inspectors to be sure that the cars had been assembled correctly at the end of the line.
