Carb numbers, interchange with other GM lines?
Carb numbers, interchange with other GM lines?
OK, I think I know the answer to this question but want to run it by you guys. I've got a 1968 442 4 speed project car. It's been off the road since the early 1980s and everything I've checked has been the correct number except the carb. It's coming up as a Pontiac number, 1968 400 or 428 4 speed application. Since they're both 1968 big blocks and both manual transmissions is there any chance this could have been installed at the factory? I suspect it was swapped on in the early years as the crud buildup on it matches the rest of the engine. But before I sell it and look for an Oldsmobile application replacement I just wanted to make sure there wasn't a chance the factory ran out of Oldsmobile application carbs and stuck this one on there. Anybody heard of that happening? John
no, back in the days you're talking about, the carbs. weren't intechangeable. an olds 350 carb. was calibrated quite differently from any other gm brand. in the mid 70's-80's they did do that as they were sharing powertrains nearly corporation-wide(gm). example: an olds motor in a pontiac, buick, etc. application would have an olds numbered carb.
