68 442 rear gear ratios
How can you tell what the gearing ratio is in the carrier? I had what I was told was a 4.62 and replaced it with a 3.42. I have the original part but can’t find any info to confirm it’s 4.62. The pinion has two sets of imprints on it
9442 GM DA
and
400784 117
the rings say Timken LM603012 778 08 USA HS.
Anyone know what this is?

A 4.66:1 ratio gear set was available as a dealer-installed option on the 1968 W-30 or 442 with manual trans only. These gears required starting with a 4-series carrier, so the car would have come from the factory with either 3.42 or 3.91 gears to start with and the dealer would have changed those out for the 4.66 gears. There was no "4.62" ratio offered.

Both the pinion gear and the ring gear should have some numbers/letters stamped into them. They should have a GM part number and also the number of pinion teeth and the number of ring gear teeth.
Here's a pic from the web showing the stamping on a 4.10 ring gear. Note the "10 41" is the tooth count (41 divided by 10 = 4.10).

4.10 Gears, in process of setting up
Hello everyone! So I set my gears up, and it’s just a 4.10 swap after my pinion tore itself apart, I tried to do 0.034” pinion shim, but I needed to add more. I upped it to 0.051” and again to 0.063. (The stock shim was thicker than normal for some reason.)
in regards to the Carrier Shims, I have the shims (stock) and the backlash is at 0.008” so I am satisfied. I just wanted to see if I could get a second opinion about the gear pattern.
From what I am seeing, it appears to be a Toe-Toe pattern, or a mild Heel-Toe. So it’s suggesting that I need to likely add backlash if I am not mistaken?
Drive Side, the marks are closer to the toe, but also centered.
Coast side of gears, again pretty evident of a toe marking
