Anybody know if there is a way to make paint kick off and dry. I treated a pan with OSPHO to kill the rust and painted over it with Rust Stop enamel. It has been four days and still sticky, no change from first application. I may have to wash it with lacquer thinner and re-do.

 

Just a guess but im thinking the humidity is really high, or its too cold, if its a 2 componet paint you didnt mix the right amount of hardner or you put way to many mills on for a single componet paint, i would thinner wash it and see what happens, if its not dry now it wont kick off.

 

If heat doesn’t do it, I would do as you stated. Wash it all off and start over. Make sure you follow the ospho directions exactly. It’s not compatible with all types of paint. Mainly epoxy.

 

Not familiar with the product, but the name, Rust Stop, might indicate it is an MCU type paint, like POR-15. Moisture Cured Urethane. So if it's very dry out, it cures slowly. Even when it's hot. Try putting some water on the ground underneath the part, to give it some moisture, to cure with.

RustOff will dry in ~30mins. Start over.

 

It is not a two part paint, not epoxy based, just oil based enamel. I tried my heat gun (gets very hot) did not help. I guess it will have to be washed off with lots of ventilation for the lacquer thinner to blow away.

 

I just did some paint work on my pickup truck, using Rustoleum oil-based enamel, temp was 62 degrees, added some Japanese drier, 36 hours later it was dry and no tack. 2 more days in the sun and it toughened up as expected. Oil-based enamel fully cures in a week.

 

If possible you can heat/cold cycle it to help it kick. Get it warm for a while in direct sunlight, cool off in air conditioning a couple of times and see if it will harden. If not, strip and reapply.

 

If the paint never cured and you even used a heat gun (600*F+), then you should thoroughly clean the part and use a different paint. Since it wasn't a simple mixing mistake where you didn't add enough hardener.

 

If it's oil based and not dried, you can probably use something much less harsh like mineral spirits. Just make sure it's thoroughly cleaned before you start again.
