I painted the car on Sunday. I put 3 coats of color and 2 coats of clear on it. It turned out ok. There are a few drips and sags, but it is better than when I bought it.

I will meet a wetsand / buffing guy this weekend that is supposed to be the best in town. Once he works his magic on the Olds I will post pictures.

 

You're going to make us wait to see some pictures? How about some from far away? Looking forward to seeing your car all painted up.

 

Come Jesse post the pictures we won't criticize, well not much anyway. Takes a lot of guts to take on painting your car as far as I am concerned.

 

Any of you guys ever use Southern Polyurethane primers. This stuff is really trick and not expensive. I found out about it on the Hot Rod BBNs. Good stuff.

How do you know it's good? What kind of track record does it have? Never heard of it! If it fails, is there a tech rep available to help out?

 

I have used Southern Polyurethane epoxy primer and their high solids clear. they worked great and I still use them. if I remember right it was started by one of the guys from House of Color from years ago before they sold out. my rotisorie is painted with their epoxy and nothing else and it has held up great after 4 years. I used their clear on several boats and after 4 years they still look new.

I spoke with him yesterday on the phone. He finished the job and is happy with it. He is getting someone to help him with wet sandimg/buffing and will update soon with pictures.

I think I did a decent job. You probably can't see it in the pics but there are some drips on the hood and front passenger's fender. There is also some orange peel in the trunk and roof. I wanted to pay someone to wetsand and buff the car professionally, but it seems most places won't wetsand and buff someone else's work. I guess that is understandable. I plan on doing some reading and wetsanding it and buffing it myself.

I just got done searching our site for info on weatherstripping. I plan on ordering a deluxe weatherstripping kit from Steele Rubber and I will also order beltline weatherstripping from them for my window felts. After I assemble the weatherstripping and put the bumpers and stainless back on the car I am going to get wheels and tires for it.

After I order the wheels I am either going to order wide white walls from Diamondback or just buy a set of BF Goodrich LongTrail Tours from Sam's Club. It seems there aren't very many passenger car tires available in 235/75 R 15.

FWIW, I've been driving the Olds around town without the bumpers and interior door panels. It runs GREAT! I love driving it so much more than that stupid VW!

Anwyays, I appreciate any constructive comments you might have. Does anyone have any pointers on westanding? I will definitely do some research before I wetsand it. Hopefully I will have "after" pics up by Christmas.

I agree. You did it yourself and it looks fine. Look forward to seeing it after the wetsand/buff and with the new wheels/tires on it.

 

Looks like you're doing a great job...and painting a full-sized Olds like ours takes some guts so good for you! I'm sure you'll get tips on here about wet sanding but take a look on www.youtube.com for videos of pros giving how-to videos...there are tons on there. Keep up the good work!

Great job Jesse, I forget how big those cars are until yous see it from the side. The great white whale with a 455 attitude. Watch out or it will eat that VW.

Yes, I like the 70's colors. I decided to keep it the stock color so I didn't have to paint the door jambs and trunk.

 

how did you get the chrome roof drip scalp off?I have tried to remove it off my car,got if off around the w/s,but i am stuck on that peice!

 

The drip chorme comes off when you remove the weatherstripping. I had to remove the weatherstripping that seals the windows to the roofline. Then I removed the stainless trim that held the weatherstripping on the car. Finally, you take a few sheet metal screws out to remove the drip chrome.
