Edelbrock carb on a 78 Vette L82

Howdy group.

This carb looks like the quad that it replaced. The PO said the quad gave him trouble and swapped in the Edelbrock. The engine only has 27000 miles so I can't imagine what trouble it gave.

Anyway, I replaced the fuel filter and now I can't get the housing to stop leaking. There's some sort of fibrous gasket inside and I'm wondering if it's become deformed or something and no matter how tight I get it the housing still leaks. I don't believe it's stripped but it doesn't move very freely, even at the beginning threads.

So, what's a good plan of attack here, seek out a new fibrous gasket, get a different kind of gasket? Tighten it till it strips then back off a 1/4?

I have the quad that was original to the car. I have no idea what shape it's in. Anybody have an opinion as to which is better? The car runs like a champ with the Edelbrock and I wouldn't change it ordinarily, but I can't drive with the carb leaking that would be silly.

Thanks much.

Which Edelbrock carb is it? I don't believe they have filters in them.

It's the Performer 1903. Looks just like a Quad. Yes it uses the same fuel filter as the Quad also. I hope I didn't crack the housing or gall up the threads too badly.

Having built several L-82's, I'd say either rebuild the original carb, or order a direct replacement for it.
Although a 'pollution carb', a little tweaking can get them to run pretty hard, if you know what you're doing.
It is jetted for that application, whereas the Edelbrock is very generic.

Is the edelbrock new? Sounds like you stripped or cracked something. It's pretty common to see Qjets stripped there.
Get a rebuild kit for the original Qjet, put it back on.

Wow, you learn something everyday, I don't believe I have ever seen one of those! There should be a gasket in there to seal the fitting to the housing.
