Chevy 262

Chevy 262
I have a 86 chevy c10 with a 262. It has 1 bad lifter. I was thinking about having it rebuilt but came across a 327 motor from a 65-66 vette for $500. The cost will save me thousands. My question is would it bolt up to my tranny without any issues?

given the value of c2 corvettes yuo might be able to flip that engine and get something else. someone restoring a corvette of that year would pay decent money for a year correct engine if theirs is missing. i believe it should bolt up thou.

All small block first generation Chevy engines are direct bolt ins for any cubic inch of the same generation. The exception is the 55-57 engines that do not have the motor mount castings in the side of the block. Just because someone is selling the other engine and said it is a Vette engine, doesn't make it so. All are the same except casting numbers and factory stampings.

There is a engine suffix code stamped on the passenger side front pad that tells you what model the engine was designed for.
Here is a link to the list for Corvettes.

I was going to replace all lifters and install a performance cam but my mechanic told me there was a knocking sound too. I decided to hold off until I made a decision about what direction I wanted to go.

A bottom end knock should be pretty evident. Check your oil and look for the glitter of bearing material. If there isn't any bearing material in your oil and you have good oil pressure ask your mechanic what makes him think you need bottom end work.

While driving on the freeway to my mechanic house I noticed a knocking sound. I lowered my music to make sure it wasn't coming from my music. My mechanic was willing to change the lifters but told me he would hate to then found out the bottom end needs rebuilt. After getting my truck back I haven't heard any knocking. I change the oil and it looked normal with nothing mixed with it. Also my truck does not leak any oil.

fixing a 262v8 is putting a silk hat on a pig.
that 262 is a v8 and not a v6 right? (both were avail in that cube-sizeish that year)
Is your tranny a stick using a hydraulic clutch or pushrods? if its an auto - there are no worries at all.
and what does this truck look like, its a newer square body, but it is nonetheless a squarebody and they are valued. perhaps a 350 is in order?
and, I hope the $500 327 is not saving you "thousands", you can get a toluca made 3970010 4 bolt 350 for under $1600 NEW, with a warranty....and in a squarebody its never more than a 4 hour operation...
where in oregon? I got some contacts in seaside if you have trouble locating a motor...
also, that 327 aint gonna be hardened valve seats. any work done to it?
and Im pretty sure joe was being tongue in cheek - there were more 327s put in impalas than vette 327s ever made I bet....

My 262 is a v6 with auto tranny. I prefer to leave it stock. Am not trying to get more horse power. I also love the gas mileage. It runs good beside the lifter noise. Tranny was rebuilt last year. Seaside is 2 1/2 hours from me. That's the beach, I live in the city. What is the name of the person/company in seaside.

fear not, the v8 conversion is still possible but now you are about 5 inches longer...you need a different fan clutch and radiator shroud AND a slightly larger radiator perhaps. if the truck has the 3.42 axle and any parts of the tow package like KC4 or VO5 (look inside the glove box lid) then the radiator will support a light duty v8.
that year v6 does suffer from knock due to worn oil pumps and there were problems up top because of restricted oil to the heads (85-89 mostly)
as for seaside, there is a rumor (quite true in fact) that I am related to one of the sales mgrs at Lums

Chevy 262
I have decided to just replace the lifters on my 86 chevy pickup 262 v6. As I stated previously I want to keep it stock. Should anything else be replaced since they will be at the top of the engine? Thanks!
