455 heads

okay I got a 455 today .just wanting to know if the heads are worth saving ( Ka ) baged, it came from a boat and they built it up from the paper work found in the boat I am going to see if the guy will let me have the paper work it didnt think to ask if I could have it when i grabbed the motor. pulled intake off heads and block look newer / rebuilt no carbon build up but block has a few cracks from water freezing (396021Fa ) my hopes are to find a block and use these internals

cam crower 284 hdp
just wondering the foarms opions thanks justin

Cool! I've picked up at least three boat motors with cracked blocks. Its easy to forget to drain the blocks in the fall, winter freezes and that's all she wrote!

They used manual transmission flywheels on boat motors... so if your able snag that too! Since all the use it has is the starter turning the ring gear the face of the flywheel is like new.

I'm suspect you can find one closer, but I do have extra blocks if you strike out.

If you haven't completely torn it down yet, you might check out the pistons. Depending on how many trips he made to the lake you might have a nice rotating assembly there

That's my plans two cylinders have some rust but you can still see the cross eching on the walls and two. Water ports are full of sand not sure if he ran into a bank or what

Are the distribitor different in boats ? It looks odd to me

It may be something aftermarket. But the distributor should be the same and interchange just fine. I remember getting one once that had been run in salt water on a jet boat. The exhaust ports were incredibly corroded! But your location should be lakes and maybe rivers so I'd expect it to be a treasure trove of parts.

Well... I'd say its an aftermarket HEI setup looking at the plug. Any tag on it anywhere?

Got any pics of the crank? You already know the block is toast, but the low compression pistons aren't worth using even if they are good. Make sure to keep the oil fill tube baffle, oil galley plugs, etc. Those are all things you can never have too many of

Well, they aren't factory pistons so they can't be identified by the "V" or rounded notches. Unless I just can't see them in the picture...but looking at the dish they look like low compression pistons. The high compression pistons have a really small dish in them.

dishes

My machinist called my old low comp pistons "cereal bowls". They looked a lot like yours. My replacements have an 18CC. dish, but with a little additional milling, and decking, I calc. at 9.65:1. Plenty good for my weekend cruiser.

Here are some of the factory style replacement pistons available for 455. The pictures will give you an idea of what the differences are for high and low compression pistons.

High compression:

Low compression:

What is wrong with the #1 counter weight? I see one hole that looks REALLY deep and another spot that looks like it was damaged.

Yeah.....the bottom hole looks like someone tried to drill it with a hand drill. The top looks like someone hit it with a hammer and chisel.

That is what they did...the other pictures make it clearer. However, I thought they used a mallory plug...that looks like lead was poured into it. And why it's beat up is new to me...

Maybe Mark will know

Yeah the one that looks beat up looks like lead as well sorry my I phone don't take the best pics it looks like they tryed to smooth it with a stick ?

Over all all the bearings looked good I could still read the ink on them Hopefully the crank and rods are useable Not really sure what pistons to use all the ones I been looking at are expensive 😱
