New here

I am restoring a 71 Cutlass S in my basement garage to be a nice driver. I am doing it on weekends and as I have time during the week so its a slow process. It runs and moves so I am lucky in that aspect. This car has never been touched or tinkered with, just about everything is original. I will get pics as I can.

I do have a question, I will need new carpeting for it. This is an automatic car with a center console. When looking at carpet it will say manual w/console or automatic. Do I assume the "automatic" is column shift or console? I assume the difference is the trans tunnel. Is the trans tunnel the same for both with a console? Its not a manual but it has a console. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Nearly all classic Oldsmobile carpet is drop-shipped from ACC. I ordered my '71 CS convertible carpet from Legendary Auto Interiors & it was drop-shipped from ACC. I took the liberty of loading up a 1971 Cutlass into the ACC on-line product tool which demonstrates the auto loop carpet (OEM) will fit with or without console.

Ok, thanks a ton. So I wonder why they make the differentiation between the two. I thought maybe since the carpets are molded they were different.

Go with the mass backing also I assume?

You'll note variations in on-line statements by most of the vehicle carpet manufacturers. I can't speak directly to 'why' they differentiate on one site vs. another site.

I think this is the Legendary Auto Interior on-line web site for your car (below)??

Here's another recent thread while there are many threads on this site regarding carpet if you perform a Search. Some w/ more pleasant commentary than others.

I went w/ mass backing w/ no issues. I believe backing is a user preference. Good Luck.

I'll say this if you call Legendary Auto Interiors they have excellent customer service very willing to assist on the phone. (800) 363 - 8804

Click on the 'SAMPLES' breadcrumb on the Legendary website to view the GM Auto color samples.

A stick floorshift car is going to have a "hump" on driver side of the transmission tunnel to clear the floor shifter linkage rods. Carpet should be heat-molded to fit over the "hump".

An automatic floorshift car doesn't need the "hump" as the shifter cable routes through a hole and grommet on the tunnel.

Sometimes carpet for a console car comes with a section cut out over the tunnel. Mainly to avoid interference between carpet and console parts.

Good luck with the car.

This is it the day after it was delivered.

I have the front end apart now and am very close to getting it buttoned up to start on the rear. Power driver seat still works!!

Excellent!

You can get carpet here.

https://www.automotiveinteriors.com/default.asp

I ordered a set of seat covers for my 86 Ford F250 from them. They have good customer service and decent prices.
