Hi everyone, I just bought a '69 cutlass S convertible. I beleive it is in a very good shape but there is always somethings to improve or replace. My first project is to replace the wheather stripping since they seem to be the original ones!! I am looking forward to hearing from you guys about how to do it and where to get my parts.

A word of advice: SHOP AROUND

I just bought a bunch of weatherstripping (doors, trunk, cowl-to-hood seal, convertible top header seal) from rockauto.com. I priced a bunch of places (Fusick, Autozone, Steele, Metro Molded Parts, Rubber the Right Way, USA Parts Supply, Carparts.com, rockauto, and even J.C. Whitney), and rockauto was consistently lower, sometimes much lower, in price than anyone else. What's interesting is that it's often the SAME parts we're talking about.

For example, Metro Molded Parts is, I believe, a manufacturer of weatherstripping, not just a supplier of something someone else makes. Their part number for the door weatherstrips I bought (a pair for the doors on my '67 Delta 88 convertible) is the same part number that appears if you search Autozone, Carparts.com, or rockauto.com. Metro Molded sells the pair of weatherstrips that they manufacture for $107.20. Autozone sells the identical thing for $94.71. Rockauto sells the identical thing for $64.79. Carparts.com sells the identical thing for $80.44. I, of course, ordered from rockauto, and when I received them, they were, as I expected, in plastic packaging that says Metro Molded Parts on it.

So how can rockauto sell Metro Molded's part for not much more than half what Metro Molded sells it for? I have no idea. We don't question the marketplace, we just bow to its wisdom.

My point is, as I said at the top, shop around. It pays. There aren't that many different manufacturers of reproduction rubber, but there are lots of resellers, and their prices vary widely.

To finish the thought, Fusick, which I believe carries Steele Rubber products, wanted $89.50, while Steele itself was more expensive than any of them at $119.60, which is pretty close to double the rockauto price. USA Parts Supply wanted $95.49 while Rubber The Right Way (yes, that's what they're called, rubbertherightway.com) wanted $95.49.


Year One isn't included in any of this because they don't carry parts for the big cars, only the Cutlasses.

 

I am finally getting to rehabilitate my 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass Convertible. It is currently disassembled. I have most of the parts to restore already. Good friends that have restored in the past helps. They are great to keep me on the ground about what to do and when.

 

Imho, if the car is going to need paint, the weatherstripping needs to be done later.
