Greetings from Sarnia Ontario

I have been enjoying the site for awhile now and would like to say hello.I am working on a 1972 cutlass s 442 that has not ran in 20 years. It was a one owner before me and has been in storage for around 20 years. It is a 350 2bbl bench seat car, with no air,it does have an 8-track and rear defogger.I will try to post a pic or two, cheers.

Welcome aboard!
Your 72 appears to have all the right things to make it a 442 on the outside with the W29 appearance and handling package. Yup, sadly the 442 could be a 350 2bbl back then. Where was your car built? If you take out the interior look for a broadcast card. It's a Fisher Body document and if it has W29 in Box 12, frame that sucker. It proves that your car is a real 442. Aside from the W30 cars built at Lansing, the only way to document a 442 is through build sheet, broadcast card, original bill of sale, or window sticker.

Look forward to seeing and hearing more about your car!

Thanks Allan,I was lucky enough to get a dealer invoice and pictures of the car when it was new.The invoice shows the w29 package at$127.45 and the 8-track was $156.80,go figure.I will try to post a pic when the car was a few days old,if it is not to big.

Welcome. Nice car. I thought all the 442's came with the rallypac gauges & tach?

That is just awesome! Frame those documents so they never get lost or damaged. They add to your cars provenance. If you have the U80 tape player you likely also have the rear speaker option.

From what I can see, you have some nice options
C49 - Electric rear defog on glass
D35 - Sport mirrors
N66 - SSII wheels
U35 - Clock
U57 - Stereo Tape Player (includes U80 rear speaker)
U63 - AM Radio (with rear speaker)
W29 - 442 Appearance and Handling package (includes FE2 suspension)

From what I can see of your car (and guessing it's from Lansing) your VIN should start out 3G87H2Mxxxxxx
That would translate to
3-Oldsmobile
G-Cutlass S Hardtop Coupe
H-350 2bbl (standard engine)
2-1972 model year
M-Lansing production

I would hazard a guess that you'll find some of the following on your cowl tag under the hood.

ST-72....33687..LAN...XXXXXX BDY
TRM - 947....A52........75 75 PNT

There will also be a time date code on the bottom left of the cowl tag (eg: 04B)

Looks like someone had trailer brakes installed at some time?

Nope, that would be nice though John. U21 was an option on all Cutlass models since 1967 though. Even the Vista cruiser could get them. Even W30's had to have the U21 gages ordered as an option.

Very good Allan,alsoN47,m38,j50,c49,a01 and ps6 these options plus the ones you mentioned come to a total of$1045.50 along with the base price of $3825. The invoice calls for white stripe,I thought white interior would get a white stripe automatically? Here is a different pic of car

Dan, welcome to Classic Olds from the Nation's Capital (don't hold it against me! )

As Allan has demonstrated, there are a lot of nice, knowledgeable and helpful people here.

I've got a '72 Cutlass S that I've been adding some of the 442 styling touches to, minus the badges.
