fantastic work , great color !!!!

 

Was able to get the body color sanded this weekend. Now have to mask it off to paint the second color where the woodgrain was. Once the second color is on have to wet sand the whole car again and buff it out and that part will be done. Still a long ways to go but getting to the fun part now. Here are some shots of the body color sanded.

 

I had some vacation coming so got the two tone setup,masked and painted this past week. Now to unmask the whole car colr sand and rub it out. Then to star getting it back together. here are some shots of the second color.

Got everthing unmasked and was able to sand and rub the hood. Looks pretty good may have to rub it once more before final install. Got a qestion what is everone using for rubbing compond?? A few of pics.

Thanks for the positive remarks and the color and build. This color combo is a little different for me and still need to see it all together. I was able to get the fenders rubbed out and put away so now can concentrate on the body. Here are some pics of the fenders.

 

I think it's a cool custom approach to doing the VC without using woodgrain. Have you decided what wheels to use to showcase this beauty? I'm visualizing something with chrome that you can do matching paint inserts on?

 

WOW! that is an amazing color combo! Looks sharp!

 

These are the wheels I have for the Vista.They are Billet Specialties Fast Lane series. The sizes are 18X9.5 rear 18X8 in the front and the tires are nitto 555 295/45 rear and 245/45 front. Should fill the wheel wells up good.

 

Really nice looking wheel. Those are going to look gorgeous on the VC. Will 245 allow full lock to lock turning? Just curious

 

I hope they clear in the front the rear should be no problem. I made some measurments and think I have the backspacing right. There are ohter with "A" bodys with similar setups with no clearance issues.

 

Nice project, really am lovin' the fact you're doing a wagon! Wish more people would save them, and realize how nice they can be!

So you did go with the Hot Hue? I didn't catch if you chose to stick with the bronze or not. I have seen and used the hot hues on a couple cars, and the pics never do the colors justice. The one car I have is Warp Speed Blue, and wow, it pops! Certain that bronze does as well! Which by the way is the exact color I was going to repaint another car, which is why I am interested!

Yes this a hot hues color called sinful cinnamon/razzleing red where the woodgrain is. I did another car in the hot hues in blue mood and it really pops in the sun and hope the same is true of this. Thanks

 

Sinful Cinnamon, great, now I'm going to have to go back to the chips to decide! Had the Molten Bronze picked out, but haven't seen it on any panels, so wasn't sure about it! The Sinful looks great, going to make it a tough choice!

The cinnamon has more red in it than the molten bronze. I like this line because it is not a tri coat and is reasonably priced. I hope this all looks good when it's al together with the color choices on the outside,interiror and wheels. Picking colors is always hard and I always go back to a color I saw early on so I should go with mu gut. Good luck on your project.

 

Don't know how I missed this thread but its an awsome build and with a BTR stroker to boot. I am so jealous.

 

Can you do my VC next. Would be fun to know how many hours are in this restoration. When you have to pay you realize how many hours this takes and that most do it for the love of the hobby. At a shop rate of $55-75 per hour with all materials looks to be a $100k restoration if you had to pay. Will be one of the nicer VC around and they are really cool cars.

Richard, I se you got a Vista project going also. I am luckey to have Billl as a good friend and his knowledge of Oldsmobile engines and his facility to machine and dyno engines is second to none. I will assemble the motor to his specs and should produce about 450 hp and 600 ft lbs of torque with stock intake,quadrajet,heads and exhaust manifolds.

Lee, I will have around 600 hours in the restoration so it can add up fast and could not afford to pay someone to do it.

 

It does add up fast! I friend has like 50k in a 68 charger project, and it's a shell right now!

You want to see some nice work? Check out DSE's website, and their' project cars. I don't EVEN want to know what something like that runs!

This wagon looks awesome. I didn't realize it was you till I saw this thread.

We'll have to catch up next summer. If you get a chance to go to Vintage Race Weekend at the Glen we'll be there next September. My wife & I took the Friday of it off this year & had a blast. Next year I'm trying to talk her into taking the kids & going for the weekend. I put about 2000 miles on the 68 last summer & didn't even get it on the road until the last week in June.

 

Hi Mike, Yes I would like to meet up somtime next summer maybe at the Syracuse Nationals.

Was able to get get the gate sanded and rubbed today. Will do the sides this upcoming week. I set some of the trim on to get a idea what is would look like. Pics

This looks like the build of my "Dream Vista", but it ain't mine!!

The best Vista I had seen for sale was a maroon color with similar wheels like the ones chosen for this build. Excellent color combo.

Rob, Yes I can't wait to see this car done as this color combo is a little outside my comfort zone but everyone seems to like it.

 

In advance, I'm sorry if this comes across wrong. I thought you chose the color combo. While it's different, it's also very exciting IMO. That said, I would not allow someone else to influence my color choice if it put me outside my comfort zone, unless the project was presold to a buyer who understands time lines.

The idea of using 2 tone colors instead of 'woodgrain' or 'vinyl (on rooflines) isn't new, and neither apparently are your amazing skills at workmanship. (that's not an attempt to flatter you, it's what I believe to be God's truth having reviewed this whole thread) I have to ask though, Is this car being built for you or someone else? I know some folks build as a hobby and some for profit. I got the impression this was a hobby project car. I couldn't let something that will take 3 years to build go to someone else unless they offered a gajillion dollars for it. Just that your comment about 'being out of comfort zone' got me wondering. Again, my apologies if these comments are out of line.

 

Not taken wrong, I picked these colors for this car and maybe out of my comfort zones was a little strong. I tend to be conservitive when I do things so the red secondary color was different for me. I would never sell my cars unless was offered a lot of money. My cars are far from perfect but the work i do is all my work. This will probably be the last car I do as these are getting harder to do as I get older and the costs are getting up there.

Hi All, Was able to get the left side sanded and rubbed out so that part of the job is done for now. The next thing up is painting the dash metal and the rear area around the gate. My paint store has mixed some paint to match the interior color I picked out and will see how close it is. Then I will put the headliner in while the glass is still out. Here are a coulple of shots of the left side.

 

Snap! The sun on the lighter color pops it incredibly well. That car is going to look completely different sitting in the sun or from different angles than when it's in shade. Can't believe how much the lighter red glows in the direct sun. You mixed in light gold flake?

 

Alan, There was no extras added to the paint. It is a stock hot hues color.

I got the car off the stands and cleaned it up a little before moving on to the next area. The last picture is a preview of the interior colors. Pics.

 

I resealed the floor plugs and then will brush on a coat of eastwood rust encapulater over the floor. Here is some shots of the floor plugs sealed. Not the most exciting pics but part of the whole process.

 

I'm curious about something. I love the look of the body color on the firewall, but I see a lot that are black, not body color. What determines whether the cowl gets painted body color or black?

 

Alan, Since this is not a stock restoration but more of a restification mild custom I decided to paint the firewall body color, If I was doing a stocker it would have been low gloss black. I am going to paint the front wheel houses body color also but undecided on A/C case.

 

I would not paint the A/C case body color. You will hate it.
