The number after the OW is the sequence number of the transmission. To determine which matches your car you
must look on the other side where a partial vin is located and compare it to the vin on the dash.

one is 68 OW-1185

 

All '68 Transes should have a VIN stamp LH side. If not, then it can be for your car. Nothing to prove it's not. or is.

Protecto-Plate, if you have it, should list the exact trans serial # - the one on the OW tag. few of us are lucky enough to have the original POP for the car.

 

Just to make sure your looking in the right place here's a TH400 transmission with the vin derivative location semi-clean!

To me that is very unusual not to have a vin derivative stamped in the case. Ordinarily I would say the case was replaced, perhaps under warranty due to a factory defect. But to have two is certainly unusual.
As to the sequence number on the tag, it would be date related but in order to make it meaniful you would need data from other 68 W30s in order to compare your number and draw a reasonable conclusion as to which transmission best fits your build date.
As I write this is have a friend who has a 68 W30 T400. I could email him and ask him for the data from his car. No promises for results but I'll reach out to him . It would be nice to know the correct one for sure.

 

I think my OW number is 1744; it is VIN matched to the car, and it's an 06B build. I think Karl has an approximate OW trans tag range that came with H/O's, though it wasn't sequential or anything.
