Help deciphering body plate
I am wondering if any of you can help me decipher some specifics with my body plate. I have a book called "Catalog of American Car ID Numbers 1960-69". It is loaded with great information but lacks some specifics on my body plate.
First there is "12D" in the upper left corner. The book does not picture this marking at all. It does not show what the ST68-33687 style number means. I understand the sequence number and the trim code 953 indicates a blue interior, but the paint code puzzles me. The D should indicate sapphire blue paint, but the -6? The book says nothing about any numbers under the paint.
Any help is appreciated.
Chris
I tried to attach a picture of the body plate but the site isn't letting me. Hopefully I gave enough information.

Looks like you have a 1968 Cutlass 33687
3-shows it is a Olds
36-Cutlass S
87-Holiday Coupe
The next digits would be ( three) letters that is the plant which the car was made.
LAN Lansing
FRA Framingham, Ma
BF Fremont Ca
OS Canada
12D Would be the manufacture date 4th week of Dec
I dont have my book with me...correct me if I am wrong.
Hope that answers your question.

Thanks for the info. The fourth week in december really does make it a holiday coups doesn't it? Does anybody know what paint code D-6 means? That's the one that really throws me. I should have figured out the style number just like the VIN.

D-6 -- "sapphire blue metallic" w/"parchment" vinyl top.
1968 vinyl tops were:
2 - black
4 - blue
6 - parchment
8 - gold
convertible tops were:
1 - white
2 - black
4 - blue
8 - gold
