What heads

WHAT heads should be on this 69 is there a number where I can check, also would you change the points distributor to an later model with a module in it. Better performance?

#5 head are the correct ones. The number will be in the lower left hand side of the driver side head. As fare as distributor you mean later. You can put an HEI in it. Pretty easy or you get an kit that converts your point dist. to electronic. A lot of people on here have and I'm sure people will give advice on both.

Well I'm thinking the #5 heads are 64cc heads with 1.875 intake valve and 1.562 exhaust valve. Which the #5 heads are good heads as they are, but with a little work and larger valves can be made into really nice heads. Your compression ratio should be around 10.25 to 1

If the car came with a 2 barrel carb the compression ratio will most likely around 9:1.

Yeah that's true. The 4 barrel carb engine had 10.25:1

Absolutely. HEI, variable reluctance, or uni-light distributors are better than points distributors in every way. You can either go with a stock HEI distributor from a mid 70s Oldsmobile, or you can get a Pertronix kit to convert your points distributor to a variable reluctance type distributor. The good thing about the Pertronix kit is that your distributor will maintain a stock appearance.

The number 5 heads (397742 casting number, located directly above center cylinder head bolt on lower row, below valve cover) will be lucky to have a chamber size of 68 cc's. The ONLY way you will be able to get a 64 cc chamber with this part is to cut the heads .030". If the heads have not been cut, and have a valve job done on them, they will usually be 70-72cc.
Fact.
This will change your compression calculations by a bit.

I hate to say it, but I quoted the sites tech section. I have never had a set of number 5 heads. I guess its pretty sad that the info on the site is wrong.

Some day it might get corrected.
Until then, I'll squeak like an old wheel.
Hope it helped.
