Fuel Pump question: 69 400ci

I'm new to Olds so apologizing in advance. Looking to replace fuel pump on '69 442. Has a 400 with AC. Couple questions:

1. Seeing 2 lines from tank to pump. Maybe unique to AC cars ?? Is one hose a return line to the tank...or what's purpose of second line ?
2. Is there a preferred source/brand/vendor for a 2-line pump. Appears some vendors don't list pumps for AC equipped '69 400 config.

Thanks,
Adrian J.

The fuel return system seems to generate among the most questions on this site, for some reason.

Adrian, if your fuel pump has 2 lines one is fuel OUT and the other is fuel RETURN. I suggest buying a fuel pump from the auto parts store if originality and stampings aren't important to you. You can get a lifetime warranty on a fuel pump as long as you keep your receipt. Every REAL car guy should do this for ALL of his car receipts.

FYI always use Google to do your initial search.
9 of 10 times it will take directly back here to the right thread.

There are some variations in Olds fuel pumps (such as the angle of the outlet, the height of the housing, etc) but in general two parts cover just about all applications:

Carter M6108 - without return line
Carter M6109 - with return line

I would do as suggested above and buy the fuel pump from your local auto parts store as that makes returns / exchanges very easy. As far as brands, any should be OK.

Go to any auto parts store and order a fuel pump for any 68-72 455 Cutlass, Delta, Ninety-Eight with a/c and You'll be set.

if memory serves me correctly, a 40523 is the pump that was on the 69 400.
Airtex uses the same part number, and the outlet fitting is angled correctly. Some pumps have the outlet angled wrong. At least, that has been my experience.
