thank you 507OLDS

That is oddly coincidental: This is an 05C or third week in May built car.

I see, so 0 is the year, D is the month, and 20 is the day of the month.

I was thinking that OD was one of the codes they list in the assembly manual.

So the code would have been an ink stamp then?

I am now looking for a 1100934 alternator.

Does anyone have one?

I have a 71 W30 4-spd,built the last week of March. I have everything intact,so if you have any questions,I'll try and help. I also had another 71 W30 4-spd that was built the first week of June/71,and I kept a lot of info from that car,as it was also complete, nothing missing.

That is very kind of you 507OLDS and I appreciate that a lot.

There is a lot of information above: and great stuff!

I have a '71 W-30 with 75K miles. The engine and transmission are out right now and the numbers on both of them match the VIN.

The car has an M-22 and a 3.73 gear code TO, and as far as I can tell from the above post and searching this site the only non original component I have is the alternator.

This is what I have and I wonder if you will please comment for me?

H heads

Aluminum OLDS W-455 intake manifold, and what looks like a cast in date code on the bottom reads 8.5.70. Below that is cast in 5887, and below that is stamped in JT. If it is a 1970 date code, why not a '71 date code?

I have a V01 four core radiator

I have a fan shroud

I have an OR code fan clutch

I have a 408329 water pump which this post says is correct.

I have a 7041253 RE carburetor date code 2110. This post says that it is supposed to be a 7041256 carb, but then I found this post which states “They never made the 7041256. Some of the earlier 71 manuals were printed before the GM bulletin, stating that the 7041253 would be used instead. If you ever see a 7041256, it is not real.” And on the subject of my carb's date code, why the 210th day of 1970?

I have a 1112036 distributor date code 0G22. Why a July 22, 1970 code?

I have a KM water pump pulley

I have a 1100880 alternator with a date code of OD 20 which I now know to be incorrect.

Thank you for your time.

Does your car have the original master cylinder? If so what is the two letter code stamped on the master cylinder?

All of the pieces listed for your car, with the exception of the alternator, are correct. I have a 70-dated intake as well. There was also a strike during this period,so only a handfull of 71 W30's were built at the end of 1970.Most of them were built in 1971,so I can only assume that some parts were made or cast, then sat due to the strike, hence the long span in dates.Parts like the intake, carb, and distributor were made in batches,so there are only a few dates that they were produced.I have only seen 2 julian dates for the H-heads.Mine is also an M22 4-spd,TO 3:73 rear,4-row radiator,shroud,329 pump, etc.

For reference the option codes
C60 = A/C,
Y72 = Heavy Duty Cooling and 55amp Decatron generator.

Factory Cooling Options:
Code VO1 was the Heavy Duty Radiator Code EC part number 3017107, 4 core – not available with the Y72 or C60 options, mandatory and available only with 3.91 axle, except it is mandatory with the 442 W30.

Code VO2 was the Heavy Duty Radiator Code FE part number 3014745, 3 core – not available with the Y72 or C60 options, mandatory and available only with 3.42 axle.

Code Y72 was the Heavy Duty Radiator Code ED part number 3017108, 4 core – not available with the VO1, VO2 options, not available with W30 or W31, not available with 3.91 or 3.42 axles. Mandatory with W33 (police use). Available with or without C60.

So if you wanted heavy duty cooling and you were not a 3.91, 3.42, or W30 you had to go with the Y72 option, which included a heavy duty radiator and heavy duty generator. It was available with or without C60 (AC).
There were different pulley requirements for AC, PS and "Heavy Duty Generator and Engine Cooling"), as illustrated above, but I cannot find specific references to the pulley requirements for VO1 and VO2. However, as Brian indicates, the logic behind "Heavy Duty Generator and Engine Cooling" may refer to Y72 or VO1 or VO2.
I can find different fan clutch requirements:
Application, Fan Clutches:
AC x (Y72 or performance) Clutch 403982, code OU
350 OAI Clutch 403982, code OU
SX AC, x Y72 Clutch 4949861, code OR
442, VC w AC, x (Y72 or OAI) Clutch 4949861, code OR
442 OAI, Clutch 4949861, code OR
Y72, Clutch 401797, code OS

x means except

It would be great if we could get some build sheets with these option shown. I have searched, but I have yet to find one which had Y72 without AC, which would speak uniquely to the alternator, pulley and clutch delivered components for the Y72 option.

I have been told that the reason the Y72 option included the heavy duty generator is either it was typically choosen for towing applications, where there would be additional draw for towing lights etc., or becasue it was an option code designed for use with the police cars, which had electrical draw requirements for lights and electronics. This is only anecdotal.

i have a 70 sx convertible that looks to have the y72, unfortunately, the 455 is mia and so is the alternator. the harness is for the HD alternator - internal regulated like the 442. , the fan still on the car is the OR - ED radiator MIA also.

question is was the y72 available for the SX non 4400 series. or was my alternator harness changed?
