Hello fellow Rocketeers,

Quick question, but a little background first.I have recently pulled my engine to freshen it up and now I am contemplating the dreaded 2/4 barrel carburetor dilemma.( I am struggling because I really want a nice ride, my 2 barrel feel pretty sluggish even aftre the rebuild) Do I want to keep the stock 2 barrel or do I upgrade to the 4? I currently have the standard V-8 330cid engine and recently rebuilt my 2 barrel rochester carb. To my main question specifically, will the intake manifold from a 1973 olds 455 fit with my 330? I would like to upgrade my carb to a holly 650 cfm. Please weigh in. This is my first project and i am proud to say that I am doing it all myself step by step. I am eating this elephant one small bite at a time. It has been some experience thus far anyway I digress. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

 

Changing the intake isn't too difficult, but you'll need to find one from a 330, 350 or 403. The 455 won't interchange. You may need to change the throttle linkage and choke setup, depending on what kind of carb you decide on. Not a big deal, but can take some time to resolve. If you go with a newer carb like the holly you mentioned the electric choke conversion will take care of that. You may need to get or fabricate a different rod from the firewall to the carb. OK, I'm getting ahead of myself... what year/model of car do you have? The 330 leads me to believe 1964-67 but if it's in a newer car the throttle will be different. So look at what you have, map out the swap and as you progress in your plans post any questions that come up. John

 

I have had small blocks with both 2 and 4 barrel carbs,make the swap to 4 barrel.You will be glad you did.

Why a holley carb?

 

eThanks 4 the quick responses. I Actually have a 1967 oldsmobile cutlasss town sedan. I don't have any particular loyalty to holley. I just happened to get on that my neighbor had lying around the neighbor gave me figured I would put it in since he is willing to part with it.

I'm partial to the Rochester quadrajets, but you'll likely find different opinions on that. Whatever you decide on unless you get a similar vintage quadrajet you'll likely need to do something different with the choke. I know you can change the 1970 and newer quadrajets to an electric choke. Aftermarket carbs should also have that as an option. Plan that out before you spend the money on a different intake. If you want the most bang for your buck put a Holley 500 2bbl on the stock manifold, there is a nice aftermarket adapter plate that works very well. I have done this several times in the past and it works very well. I had a 350 Olds years a go that I had the stock intake and a 500 and changed to an Edelbrock and a 600 and it ran so much better with the 500 I put it back on.
