Restore 68 Hood Vents/Inserts?
My 68 Cutlass hood had three inserts that were chrome or stainless fins w/ flat black paint in between in the grooves. The paint is flaking but the chrome looks good. Any ideas on how to restore these? Would aircraft stripper to remove the paint, rinsing to clean, painting the whole thing w/ flat black, than polishing the paint off the tips of the "fins" work? Or is there a better way?

I used aircraft stripper and it took many coats and lots of patience. Then I painted it as you described above. FWIW the aircraft stripper barely touched it.

I recently restored a pair of '72 hood louvers - they were in great condition, with barely pitted chrome and only the original gold paint finish on the fins.
I gave each 1 pass with stripper to remove any loose/flaking paint finish and then used the remaining original finish as a base to grip the new paint.
I masked off all the chrome and applied a gray primer base, then gloss black on the fins to contrast the chrome.
They went back on my red hood and look great.
