68 Cutlass S Hood Inserts

I removed the hood inserts from my car today they are chrome with flat black. Is there any way to repaint them or do they make reproductions.

thanks Bruce

I just ordered a set new from Year One. 200 bucks. Mine were pitted. I have painted these before and found it was easier to mask off the outer edge and paint the whole insert. Then come back with mineral spirits and get the paint off the chrome. I would take paper towel and put it on the edge of cardboard. Get some spirits on there. Then run it along the edge of the top of the insert getting the chrome clean but not disturbing the black in the ribbing. You'll be amazed at the ease of doing it this way.

very lightly grease the rib edges before painting? Like with a fingertip.

I painted mine, somewhat tedious but look nice. I used masking tape. Prep is important, clean every little "right angle".

I merged your two identical threads. Typically, you'll get better answers if they are all in a single thread, as this allows people to see and comment on what others have written.

My fingers are too big, so I use a Q-tip.

This is how I did it. ^ ^

You'll never strip the old paint out of the inside though. I tried everything to get it out. I ended up just lightly sanding it and painted over it Krylon Flat Black
