Year of manufacture license plates in Virginia (question maybe Joe P can answer)🤔

DTU-072
D=Dave
T=?
U=U Code
072 is obvious
T = ? Your last name begin with letter "T"? That would be a lucky straw. Or, you coming up w/ a clever rhyme or something for the DTU (Dave The U Code 72; Dave's True U Code 72?)

When you call in ANY license number you must tell them the state of registration - to begin with. If the LEO was truly doing their job, they will have identified the license number as belonging to a YOM registration based upon the YEAR as clearly and explicitly identified on the license plate itself. You can obviously only look up what is reported to someone. If the LEO failed to identify the plate as a YOM plate, there most likely would be no difference.

So I went back to the DMV today to plead my case further, and once they understood that the plates were no longer physically in the guy's possession, they said all I need to to do is take them to the DMV and they'll switch them to my name...success! Now I just gotta hope that they're still available. I'll be checking that tomorrow 😁

Dave - I believe you need to consider broadening your search. In <10' I've found ~20 1972 Virginia vehicle license plates. If you're only going to buy from one vendor, that's your prerogative; but, I've found ~20 for sale.

Norm, I've been searching on eBay as well as using a general search on the innerweb and I too, have found several, but as previously mentioned, I'm trying to find one that says something (in some abstract way) about the car. For example, "DRX-172" could mean "Dave's RX is his '72"...maybe?
