Got my Cutlass appraised this morning for the insurance policy. Should have the report back by next Wednesday and take the afternoon off Thursday to go and register it. The car hasn't logged a mile since 1991. I have a three day weekend thereafter and I'm very much looking forward to driving it all three days if the weather holds.

I'm going to guess that car is appraised at $7800 bucks. If your car were mine it would be worth much more than that to me as all our cars are. Have you looked into Hagerty Ins where you do an agreed upon value? I did that with my DD Vette (99). We agreed on 19k. Well, I agreed on 19k. My rates reflect that burn-down value.

I really have no idea what the value may be but you don’t get much for 10k anymore. See how it goes…
I have a good friend who schooled me this way. He stated that unless you are a mechanically inclined person, you can't own a car like this. I have just purchased a 2004 DTS Cadillac, 44k on the clock, Pearl Paint, just really sweet. But, it was throwing two major codes. Air bag light and a coolant low light. I fixed them both for under 15 dollars. The driver's side rear window didn't work either. I fixed that by repairing the ground associated with it.
Like my friend said, You really need to be handy around a car or it will cost you a fortune. You have done the work yourself saving you a ton of money and giving you a great experience to boot.
P.S. on your car. Do you really care what it's worth? I never did.
I totally get this. I had zero plans to sell all of my stuff until I did. After getting rid of the warehouse I had nowhere to house my toys. I knew this going into it. I have two cars now instead of 11. Space is the issue for me. The maintenance was secondary. But, keeping all those cars insured and driving WAS expensive. In the summer I would go to the warehouse and pick a car to drive until I got tired of it. Then I would rinse and repeat. What a great life! I once had a guy on my commuter train tell me I had the coolest cars!
I was driving one of two 66 Toros I owned at the time.
Sad day today, time to put the car up on stands for the winter. But it is the latest I have kept the car out, Nov 16th. I took it out for a blast just to mix the fuel ⛽️ and the conditioner. After 1/2 a tank I decided to go back to the gas station, top it up and go home. Nothing planed for this winter in terms of "additions" but I do hope to have it accepted for a major classic and hot rod show in March. We will see, and I will post picks if it happens. Time to warm up with a Hennesy.

I damaged the core support paint a while back, so I shot pieces of metal with 10 different spray paints, and none are perfect, so I masked the entire top of the core support and am putting a spray can's worth on it.

Today I changed the valve cover gaskets. They were 14 years old, (since I did the rebuild), cork and they were due. Here is a picture of the Harland sharp rockers. No gunk build up.
My heater core in my '67 4-4-2 started a minor leak from the heater box near the end of the season around the end of October. I've owned the car for 6-years, and I've never had the need for heat or defrost here in St. Louis, so I decided to go the easy route, heater delete. Bought rubber/silicone nipples for pipes coming off the waterpump and going into the back of the intake. Bought 2 plugs for the pipes going into and out of.the firewall to/from the heater core. Only issue was getting the hoses off the pipes. They would not come off without being cut, so that's what I did.

I got the ‘80 registered on Thursday afternoon and took it for a ride yesterday for the first time in 33 years. In spite of the time passed it felt very familiar and I enjoyed the short drive down the back roads in town. An arm on the sill, one hand on the wheel and listened to my tail pipes….was terrific!
It needs a front end alignment but other than that it ran great!
Today, i made it home from completing the coast to coast badge. It was on the Pacific coast 10/22 at the Santa Monica Pier. Yesterday, 11/30, it was the Atlantic coast on Assateaugue island, VA.
Nice! I'd love to do something like this!
Is it an actual badge? Like- do you have to register and then when you're done, you get a badge? Or is that just an expression?

I thought about getting some made, but it was more of a Boy Scout pun. 😁
I was joking with a friend about where I need to order my jacket from, as he took his Nova coast to coast several years ago.

I've seen old cars with these really sweet brass badges on the grille for whatever... whatever they're for. There should be a legit badge, like a shield or an emblem for something like driving your old car across the country. is it lame to have badges on your grille?

I tore my dash apart. Everything. I paused at ripping out the steering column so I'm still looking at the empty frame with 1 screw holding it in place. I'm going to a body shop supply guy tomorrow in Milford. to see how closely I can match the paint. If it's really close, I won't take out the steering column, I'll just paint the glove box and ash tray and the lower dash that's scratched and looks like crap, but if it's not a good match, I'll have to repaint everything. That'll suck. But I'll make sure all the wires and vacuum lines are good, and everything works before I put it back together... sorry no pictures.

Bring them the glove box door to have something for them to match it to.
Are you redoing the vinyl dash pad?

Yeah, brought the ash tray, glove box and the gauge trim with me, to B&T Auto Body Supply in Milford. He was great, spent a lot of time with me to match the color. I'll share a couple pics, but I'm farther along now than these photos show. All the gauges are out, everything. It's just the shell now, but I don't have pictures of that. It's hard to get the dash frame out with the steering column still in the car. I might have to pull the steering column completely out of the car to get the dash board frame out. And to answer your question about the vinyl, the seats and rear arm rests are at the upholsterer now. I have to order carpets and I have the insulation already, from Speedway Motors. It's a foil covered jute, foil both sides. The only issue now is the weather- it got cold. My barn isn't heated so I really can't paint the car floor until I resolve that issue. Either I find a way to heat the barn, or I hope for a good day, or I wait for spring. So- that's why I'd like to get the whole dash frame out. I can paint the dash in the house (or a heated space) and put the dash back together, do the mechanic repairs I want to do, and in the spring I'll just have to paint the floor, do the carpet work and put the seats back in. for comparison...
Dave,
You will have to remove the steering column to remove the dash frame from the car.
At least that's my experience.
Be very careful with that dash.
It's made from die cast zinc (potmetal) and is easily broken.
Here's an IPB of a '63 dash, very similar to '64.

Mine is a little different but when I took the whole dash out all I did was unfasten the three nuts that are attached to the 'bracket assembly' for the steering column located on the backside of the dash and remove the round plate held in by two screws under the column and then remove the two allen screws and lowered it in place resting it on a box that held it up off the floor. I have photos of it if you need them. Your's looks like it's going to be much easier to take out than mine. Check your manual, pretty sure it shows the assembly in there.
Decided it was time to blow the dust off of the Olds and prevent it from becoming my DIY barn find. Changed the oil a while back and went with some Amsoil Z ROD 10w40. Pumped out the 3 year old fuel and coaxed the 350 back to life. A good wash then out for some fresh Chevron 91 and a few pics. Plenty of little nuisance items to take care of but it was nice to go for a rumble. Been a while since my last post, time seems to have jumped into high gear.
I put another set of mufflers on the car last week and new front coil springs today.
The fully welded 2.5" SS Pypes Turbo Pro mufflers just didn't agree with me so I changed them over to 2.5" SS Walker Quiet Flows. They are an OEM replacement muffler for the '05-'14 Dodge Charger Chrysler 300 Hemi cars. They were 2"s longer than the Pypes mufflers so I had to shorten the pipes on the car for them to fit. Otherwise it was a simple job and I like the deeper tone from the tail pipes.
The coils are Moog HD 260-350 Olds V8 no A/C '78-'80 Cutlass. The car now sits normal, to me, and rides & handles better. Next item for replacement is the power steering box, it's leaking badly and there's no more room for adjustment. I'll be getting a new one.
That looks really good. I always loved that vintage Cutlass. For what GM was doing in the late 70's/early 80's, I just think Olds was top shelf and the Cutlass was probably the only American made car that I could actually get excited about- maybe the Monte Carlo too, but I owned one of those and it didn't excite me... love the color too- nice car.
