Hi Mark from pics it looks legit , original integrity of casting looks unscathed . However 72 is not my year so I would check with Sam Grewal far as date codes and ect. He has vast pics to match with

So sad, Just discovered another restamped carburetor from the same source. This guy is not on the net and knew nothing about what had happened. It really bothers me to see people get cheated like this.

Is the source a person or company? Any chance of him getting a refund?

Just to add to the database... This is the original carburetor to a 71 442 with a 070 date and a cowl tag date of 4th week of march.

How about this one: real or fake?

Here is a rare assembly line installed carburetor for the 1969 Oldsmobile 442 with the w-30 option. GM # 7029254 with the broadcast code UB. This carb has no date stamped into base which is not uncommon. This carburetor is original and not a restamp or remake. Carb looks complete with the exception of the choke pull off which would be replaced on a rebuild. Throttle plates, choke plate and linkage move freely. This carb has been sitting a long time and will need to be rebilt/ restore. Inlet threads are good. Please look at all the pictures.

Agreed the 4 and UB look different relative to the other numbers, but the stamp image has poor depth of field putting all the other numbers in increasingly poor focus. In short I'd want to see a better stamping pic and for that matter all of the pics are five footers no nice crisp close ups that I would want to see before plopping down the 700+ price tag.

Just wanted to put this out there. This is a 70 455 2 bbl distributor. It has two different fonts for the 9. I know this distributor and it is for sure real, Just wanted to post it.

Now for the real kicker. Both of these distributors are real and NOT restamps. They are for 70 350 4 bbl engines. One of these I found in a 1974 engine that was in a 70 convertible that sit in a storage unit in Indianapolis since the 80's. The other came from a Rallye 350 from Illinois and I bought that one in the 90's. I know both are real and both have the same date. The thing is, I have seen this same number with different dates that are completely different. Has anyone seen this version before? Like I said, I know for a fact these are real.

Are those chips in the casting (right side distributor) from someone trying to pry it out?

nope, the pad for the stamp looks like it was scrubbed clean but not grounded down. The 55 NEG is really sharp but a couple of mine have the variation in stamp impression as well

I am almost sure that is a restamp. The 1 on the date is not correct and the NEG is the wrong font. At least I have not seen an NEG in that font. This picture is of an NOS real one.

If you look close, The casting of the open face side don't even look right. Maybe there was more than one casting? I am not sure. The back looks good but not for that price

It should also have a #5 pulley on it and not a 7

Also, notice the difference in the "12V". Eric's NOS one is obviously consistent between the characters, while the V and 12 on the other one look to be different in size and striking depth.

Not an expert, but would not want to gamble 1500.00 on this one.

Thanks guys for pointing out the differences.

I know there was some re-stamped parts being passed around on CO a few years back, and was curious if this alternator was one of them.

The fonts of these stamps do seem to be getting closer, so we can only hope that they never figure out how to incorporate these into a roll stamping.

wow, I did not even notice the price, for that amount there is no way I would take the chance with the 55 NEG looking like that. As I said I am pretty sure mine have an unequal depth of stamp but not that instant of a change.

Its possible it's real but the stamping looks off and some wear around that area? I can't say for sure though but I would be uncomfortable spending big $ the vac advance looks like replacement.

It does look re-stamped to me. Hopefully, you didn't pay a lot. The vac can is aftermarket as mentioned, but they don't last forever. Underneath the advance weights...like if you turn the dist upside down...there's a number stamped. Your 3rd pic, that area. That's like the last 2 or 3 numbers of the part number of the shaft. That # would tell you if it has the right shaft for a 977.

And the scratch marks. One thing I've learned from this thread is to look for the rough casting texture. If its suddenly smooth just where the numbers are then its suspect.

What's the application for a 1111981 distributor? I think I have one but my interchange is not clear on application.
