Well- looks like I missed my turn for whatever reason.

I'll argue that 1964 date on the original Dual/Gate, since all the Hurst promo literature for it shows 1963 Starfires and Grand Prixs, along with a very young Linda Vaughn dressed up in a mink stole. It was also not factory offered- strictly aftermarket- and seemed to be way more common for Pontiac consoles than for Olds. I've seen (and owned) Pontiac versions, but have only seen pictures of the Olds version. Hurst also offered a plastic "mini-console" for cars without factory consoles.

Now since we're on the Dual/Gate, what two things made that original 1963-64 offering unique?

 

First factory option for dual gate was 1970. I'm with you on aftermarket option was 1963 for starfires. Got an old car rag around here that has a rather sexist sounding, by today's standards, full page ad advertising them to fit 1963 big cars.

Two things about the early birds? Key lockout for "his" and reverse was all the way back in the "hers" gate. PNDSLR (3-2-1 in "his" gate). That's my guess.

1970 as a factory option, though standard on '68 & 69 H/O's. I believe the first year Pontiac offered it was 1967 on the GTO.

 

69HO43, you have the floor! It had a key lockout and was designed for the Slim Jim Hydramatic PNDSLR shift pattern.

Think it was 64 they brought out a TorqueFlite version for Mopars.

And since Chevrolet and the BOP midsizes were still using two-speed automatics until 1966, they were a little late to the party. Then there was that weird shift pattern Cruise-O-Matic Ford had till 1967, which just would not have worked with a ratchet shifter of any description.

 

I wasn't ready with a follow up of my own. But I'll come up with something shortly.

Calientes had suede inserts on the leather seat covers and I think they were available in '84 and '85. Also the steering wheels were a leather and wood combination. I also seem to remember some type of "belts" --not the safety belts that were affixed to car, too. I hope I'm right 'cause I have a question regarding the "Cutlass 'Surprise' Package"-----anybody remember that?

The Surprise was the Y76 regional marketing car. It was known by many other names depending on where in the country it was destined to be sold. Here in Vajenya they were often VGO (Virginia Gentlemen of Olds) and in the Carolinas "Carolina Gold". There were GMO versions in Chicago and the Northeast, and dozens of others.

Hey Dave - had a few Calientes over the years (have one now) - most have had "all the options" including voice module - but I'm not sure what you're referring to with the "belts"

 

What fromer WW II P-51 pilot also drove and Olds Pace car?

 

I remember Chuck Yeager driving the 88 Pace Car - and I think he was a pilot too - so I'll go with him..

They made one for each Olds dealership in the country...may have been a couple extra here or there for some fat cat GM exec, but the basic answer is that each dealership got one.
