Ignition lock removal

I'm removing the ignition lock cylinder on my '71 and there is no opening where the slot should be to release the lock assy. This is a 'virgin' column that doesn't appear to have ever been apart. Is it common to have to 'punch' a slot thru the aluminum to access the release? I've never seen one without a slot.

Yep, I had to punch out the slot on my 72 column. It's pretty thin and easy to knock out.
