How I kept myself amused today

Had a little extra time so I decided to to get on to stage 2 of the restoration. Worst part was the captured nuts that spun in the cages. Overall, not a bad time.

My last bolt on the 65 I'm pulling apart is spinning in the housing. Going to give it the sawz-all treatment this week and continue. Get me down to the frame and try to flog the chassis to a needy home. Must say, good exercise, just wish I'd started wearing gloves earlier.

Ya gotta love those caged nuts. The front ones in the cowl that spun at least you can access. I popped the cage up and grabbed the nuts with a small vise grip. The rear-most ones are a different deal. Had to really get inventive.

I might try wedging a big pickle fork in the back between the trunk bottom and frame member to jam the nut for my rear left. If that doesn't work, it's out with the saw. At least mine don't have to be saved. With yours, you likely have to cut the tops off the boxes to get at the nuts, sometimes, and then re-weld.

I like that. Seriously efficient, and neat as well.

the plugs i use are from the factory. we used the to plug the power ant hole when they were drilled in the wrong car.a couple of them were found among my dads stuff when he died.they are 1 1/4 around, and can be reused. it has a small strap in the center, hit the strap with a hammer and it will poke out on 2 spots to lock under the sheetmetal. just put a little sealer around the edge and whack. can get the in different sizes at most auto paint shops or dealer.

Talking

I went at it a little differently. I wanted to make it as thought nobody did anything unorthodox. For the front, I used an air chisel to pop the cage up and grab the nut. Then I can just fold it back down and tack weld the cage back,
For the back, I used a cut off wheel to make a flap I folded up and got it that way. Then I can just fold it back down and mig it back. Nobody will ever know.

Nice to see different approaches to what is a common problem with these.
