Can't argue there.
"Ghetto" is one of those abused and overused terms that isn't in my vocabulary, and makes my hair stand up when I hear it, no matter who's saying it.
"Donk" is a word I just learned today .

hey, don't derail this thread talking about donks.

start your own thread outlining how you won't help anyone that wants/needs help installing them on their car because olds didn't build them that way.

What's the difference from having 15's or 22's???????
Didn't most come with 14's!!!!!!

I can't wait till spring so I can throw some nice 22's on my 68!!!!!!
When you stand a 15'' wheel & tire next to a 22" wheel & skinny tire they are the same height so whats the difference???

Like it or not it's here to stay for awhile. Look at it this way, better to have these cars on the road than in the junkyard. I may not care for some of there choices but they look to be very expensive to build!

I remain perplexed, but then I never understood putting station wagon springs in the back, and a couple of blue truck lights on the rear end when I was a kid either.

I like the look of all three of these cars but NOT the rims, I just do not like large rims, I even have a hard time with 18" torque thrusts etc. again that's just my personal taste. This summer I saw 26s on a Delta, again to me it just didn't work. But as mentioned its still hott rodding and I respect that these folks dig large rims

I know this is an older thread but I don't like AcesHigh's Ghetto and Donk ride commentary. THAT'S a much more disturbing trend, than putting the "wrong" engine in a car.

Someone said agree to disagree. That's how America works. Not by trying to exclude people.

Where do I stand? I have a great survivor 65 Delta 88 Holiday. I will build up my 425 not drop in an LS ( a FAR superior engine). But I will not go looking for "C" heads, I'll probably just give Mr. Edelbrock a call. HEI electronic igintion? You bet.

I am also a model builder and i see them as model builders in fullscale. A noble pursuit but not my thing. Bottom line, if you like building cars and making them cool (as you see it) then I say more power to you!

Personal tastes. That's about it.
But I will admit, the classic car bodylines do not flow well with ginormous rims.
I think 18" is the limit, but that's my own personal tastes.

They like stock , I like modified, some like ginormous rims.
In the end, I do agree it's YOUR vehicle to do with as you please.
Apparently the Donk thing is hip in some cultures, so let them pimp it how they please.

I'm doing an LS conversion in a non-numbers matching 72 cutlass (442 clone). I'm not doing the LS motor because it's cool, but because I did one before in a 68 corvette convertible. And the reliability, ease of maintenence, gas milage, power, etc is hard to beat.
If Olds was alive today and building a 442, you know it would have an LS motor (ie. camaro, firebird, corvette, GTO, CTS-V). So if anyone is ok with a 350 to 455 swap, or a Qjet to Holley swap, or an aftermarket exhaust swap, I dont see the difference with a modern LS motor swap. Why not use up to date technology if it's not a numbers matching car? I'm also going with a Vintage Air system, DBW cruise control, dynomat insulation, etc.
I am going to keep the interior and exterior stock looking, because I like the appearance. The only indication inside or out that my 68 vette is not stock is a 6 speed shifter plate. Even the Vintage Air uses the stock control panel. I'll be going that route with the Olds.
So flame away, while I'm getting 25mpg, with the cruise control on, AC blowing cold, in a comfortable, reliable ride that can be tuned with a laptop instead of a screwdriver.
Good post.

I'd be very interested if you keep the board updated on progress.
I'm looking for a 6.2L L92 myself presently or I might settle for an LY6 with a cam & Springs swap.
I already have my T-56 sitting here.

BTW though, 25mpg is a stretch unless you're going with the 6 speed. I have a 2004 GTO LS1 / 4L60 A4
in my 78z and I'm only putting down 20mpg highway. Confirmed on a 320 mile trip from St Louis.

But pleeeeeeeeease post updates. I'd love to see the progress and what choices you went with
for parts. I have my Fbody pan, and Edelbrock SS A-body headers enroute.

I've had the corvette over a year......
26mpg highway, 68 corvette covertible, 3.08 rear, Richmond 6 speed 0.76 OD, pretty much stock LQ9. Confirmed on multiple tanks of gas.
22mpg city, but I was driving pretty easy and shifting early.
I am going to see how corvette C5 or C6 rims look on the 72 Cutlass with spacers before I decide on the exterior look. They are by far the best priced low profile wheels/tires available.

That guy lives 30 minutes from my house.
I've been meaning to go meet up with him to check it out.
Badass ride for sure. That's my end goal right there.
He's probably got over $100,000 into that car if you count all the labor.

Jeff doesn't own that car, it was a customers car. Although i am willing to bet he has some cool stuff at his shop. He's a super nice guy that loves to talk about cars. I met him a couple times in Detroit, and had dinner with him and some other guys from around the country. I really like his "A" body frames.

Right now we are building a guy a 69 S convert with, get this. A 502 crate motor, 700R4 overdrive, and a 3.08 12 bolt. I don't know what it will run but the budget is 20k. Without the car. It will be reliable and have 575 lbs of torque. If Olds made an engine like this I know he would put it in instead but they don't. He is looking for reliability as well as power. He'll get it with this package. When I was younger we would put BB chevys in just about anything. We wanted to go fast. And we did. As for me I want to build a 455 for my S. That's me though. You know?

Twenty grand will build a whole lot of 455...even if YOU have to build it and adapt the 700 to it.

I ain't buying that reliability bullshit either. The best thing (the only saving grace IMO) is that a GM crate engine comes with a warranty.

And I sure wouldn't put 3.08 gearing behind an OD trans. Thought that was one of the attractions of the OD, was to be able to run deeper gears for acceleration and still loaf along on the road???

Cop-out. Pure and simple. But it's his money, so take ALL of it you can get. People like that should be parted from it.

The 700 is from Bowtie Overdrives and will handle about anything you put in front of it. The 3.08 gear is because he does alot of highway driving. I agree about the steeper gear for a city car. Reliability? I think the 502 will be very reliable with the right cooling system etc in place. The motor was 9k. New not rebuilt. 502 horse and 576 lbs of torque with a factory warranty. It will be a tire frier. The twenty is for the whole build. Rear end 3k. Hotchkis 2k etc. You get my meaning. Money goes fast. Trans 3k. Right there you have 17k. We will make it reliable, it is the reason for buying all this good stuff. A/C too!

For what GM wants for it, it had better be reliable. So you're saying an Olds engine is not reliable? That seems to be the prevailing mentality among those who want to transplant Chevrolet engines into their Oldsmobiles, or other non-Chevrolet GM car.

What about all the support systems it will have to have? it'll take a mile of electronics to make everything work.

I give up. Some of you have it in your head that the Chevrolet engine is superior to anything ever built and is the only way to get reliability and horsepower. And don't come at me with "it's not a Chevrolet engine, it's a GM Powertrain engine". It is based on Chevrolet engine architecture, and if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, odds are good it's a duck.

But seems like a lot of people are trying to create the automotive version of a platypus.

We're putting a BBC in a Cutty. It's the same as a Chevelle. It's not an LSX motor so no computer. I agree with you, that's why I have a small block Olds in my car. I want more power so I will build a BB Olds. Ain't no Chevy going in MY Olds. But I still like the 502 in anything. It's gonna be a scream. Chevy has always been cheap and plentiful, therefore cheap. You break it, you put another in.

You're puting a 572 in front of a 700R4 ??
Dude, ......even a stage III from Bowtie OVerdrives is close.....
http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com/cata...php?ITEMID=502

Just in case you've never heard of CK performance, I'd look into them for comparison.
Chris is huuuuuuge into race built transmissions and he's nationwide.

Man I don't know if I'd trust a 700R4 for a BBC power like that.
THe input drum is the weak point and there's no upgrade for that.
Chris was going to redesign it but there wasn't enough demand.
I had a Stage II 700R4 from them but not THAT kind of power in front of it.

it get me to

I normaly dont like to post negativity . but it is oldsmobile classic.and i feel a cytlass with a chevy is a chevelle.I dont want to get into whos better but i can remember being young and hearing a olds rumble. it is the most beuatiful sound and one of the rarest. And the 20 inch plus wheels and goofy interiors. why do the guys who like that have to like oldsmobiles.just my opion and i am from the old school and no im not 60 im 36 but was born into a olds family and remember going to swap meets with my dad and being lucky if you found any olds parts let alone repo stuff. just had to vent. thanks dave

With that kind of logic a Pheonix with a 260 is an Omega , a 75' Omega with a V8 is an Apollo and a 77' Vista with a 400CID is a Catalina. The six cyl put in Cutlasses was a chev and no body rags on them. The C-type diffs in 68'-69 are Chev that doesn't make them a Chevelle. I could go on for hours but I won't. I also like to see Olds engines in Olds but doesn't always happen. I do hassle people about it but it's in fun. It's your car build it to please yourself.

Like I said, when I was a kid we'd put most anything in anything. As long as it ran FAST! The last mutt I had was a plain Jane 71 Skylark with a 454 Chevy, Turbo 400, 4.11 12 bolt. Full exhaust with cherry bomb Qs. Remember those? I think the front end came up higher when it hit second than on the launch! And my wife could drive it to the grocery store. I could hear her scratch second a block away. LOL! So to each his own, except these donks. I just don't get it. Maybe I'm not supposed to.
