Did the 72 Olds Cutlass come with a coolant overflow tank? The one i just bought doesn't have one.

 

According to this 68-72 were the same. Let someone else chime in.

 

I think they came standard in 71 and on.

 

My 72 Cutlass did not come with one. I don't know what specified that the car got one. Mine a 350 with air. The repros are expensive.

 

It was an option, but you can get a repro from The Parts Place + others.

 

No. However if your car was equipped with the 455's or had a towing package, you could have them installed because of potential for overheat. It would have been nice to see all Olds equipped, but that didn't happen until the later part of the 70's (76 and on IIRC).

Fact is that if you took your 70-72 Olds (any size any engine) into an Olds dealer and told them you wanted the overflow tank because of coolant loss from running hot, they would install it for free. But you had to ask.

The repro places pretty much all have the tank/brackets etc to install in 70-72 cars. If you're looking for NOS or OEM be prepared to pay an arm and a leg. The repops are 199.00 at Fusicks and Parts Place. They don't have all the concours correct markings or correct caps, but they work just fine.

Trip - 68/69 were not the same and didn't have overflows.

 

Allan- '68 & '69 can use the same tank...it's the '73's that are different...

Yes, you're right they can use the same tank, just that it was not offered as an option for them in their respective years. The tank wasn't made available until 71. The part number is Group 1.240 Part 410008. Available for V8s with HD Y72 cooling package or Toro's with JL9 option. Same kit is listed for 73 B,C cars. Most of us who don't like coolant puking onto the ground and can afford the price of the tank will go with the repops. BTW, the original list price on the coolant tank and cap? A whopping $7.05

X2 on the 73 model year tank. It was used for 73-75 then the tank was redesigned and repositioned in 76.

 

Yeah I've seen the pricing on these things. I may just see what I can put in temporary for now.

My '72 Ninety Eight has a different one than my '72 Toronado. Only one screw to hold the Ninety Eight one, nic and simple. Wish I could find one.

 

The "single screw" mounting is an inexpensive aftermarket tank. These were common in the mid-70s in the automotive section of most department stores. They went away decades ago since every car built in the last half a century has a factory tank.

I don't remember if it is single screw, but I have one of the old universals with the rectangular bottle, metal cap, and wire frame holder in my basement. I can look for it if you're interested.
