Carb Blues

Hello Olds fans.
Please allow me to vent a little.

I just dropped off my carb to be rebuilt by a local expert
and he said the carb body needed to be replaced, threads
are badly worn at fuel line/filter point.

1970 Cutlass convertible 3 peed manual on floor.
Original QB code engine with original 7040253 carb.

I have to try to find a replacement.

Or, just have a helicoil installed in the fuel inlet.

Thanks for the response guys. I mentioned a healicoil

I'll try to find someone else.

I know that you already dropped the carb off, but I just thought that I would put this out there for future reference. I had the same problem 2 years ago for my quadrajet. At the time, I did not have the time to send it out because I was up in PA (where I used to store my Olds) and needed to get it back home in Maryland that day.

At the local home depot I found a newer type of plumber's tape (yes, plumber's tape) that is made to be used with fuel lines. Exposure to gas does not affect it at all. A few wraps on the gas line and it was able to screw onto the few threads that were left on the carb. It worked so well, I left it that way for the rest of the summer, just to see how it would hold up. Passed with flying colors.

I wouldn't call it a permanent fix, but it worked so well that the tape is now a part of my in car emergency tool box.

Yeah, but that heli coil "won't last"

You will be lucky to get another 10-20 years out of it.

Let us know how it works out.

I've got a Q-Jet i need glass beaded and rebuilt for a stock ish 72, maybe I'll consider the guys in the CT.

It's between them and Hobbs in Pelham.

I've had bad luck with Edelbrock, tuned it way rich and it's almost there. But I need someone who can rebuild the Q-Jet accordingly.

JPC, please call Ken at 860-218-5780 Everyday Performance.

I'm sure he can answer your carb questions.
