"R" terminal yellow wire on starter solenoid with HEI

Hi Olds people,
I have a 1967 442 with a 400 cid 4 speed. I am replacing an old HEI distributor with a new one. I found the old yellow lead that used to go to the points type coil just taped in the factory harness. My question is on the starter solenoid, do I still need to hook up the yellow lead to the "R" terminal or just delete it? It is hooked up, but wasn't this just to supply 12 volts to the old points coil? The only problem I have had is when going to crank the engine, the starter would spin but not kick out the drive until a few tries. So I was going to replace the starter solenoid but it looks new?

Thanks...

The yellow wire is not needed as it provides 12v to the coil while cranking and with HEI not needed. You only need the purple wire to activate solenoid.

You may need that 12v wire from the starter if the ignition is not providing a 12v in the start position of the key switch. Your starter issue may be the starter drive.

There's no harm in connecting the yellow wire to the HEI hot terminal, but you don't absolutely need it either.
