Power seat motor

I have a power seat motor that barely works. It moves very slow and I can’t be sitting in the seat for it to work. I only weigh 170lbs. Is there anyone that could go through it and get it going correctly? 1970 cutlass

Before you start to tear things apart, just a couple simple thigs to check. Is this a bucket seat or a bench? Is the motor moving slowly or is the seat itself moving slowly? When sitting on the seat (when the seat will not move) can you hear the motor runnning but the seat is not moving or does the motor stop? If this is a bucket seat and you can hear the motor running while the seat is not moving, it is most likely a worn out drive belt (replacements can be found on ebay for about $14). If the motor is struggling to move and does not run while sitting on the seat, check to see if the grond strap is still there. It runs from the power seat base to the outer rear floor mounting stud.

You said it will not move with you in the seat. So, when you are sitting in the seat and hit the switch does the motor run (can you hear it) while the seat is not moving?

Yes, holds switch and I can hear the motor but it’s not moving.

check to see if the tracks are binding. My 1970 Rallye had the same problem it end up being the front inboard mounting stud was welded in wrong when the floor was repaired.

You most likely need a new drive belt. If the mechanism (tracks, cables, transmission) was stuck, the seat would not move at all. With the belt slipping, the seat will move slowly with no load and not at all with a load. You can change the drive belt by removing the front plastic cover located under the front of the seat. If you have the later 72 version, you will need to remove the lower side aprons to get the cable cover off in order to get to the belt cover. In the photo below, the track on the left is an early design and the track on the right is the later 72 3-cable design. If you remove the black plastic cover, you will see a rubber belt wrapped around 2 plastic pulleys.

If complete and original, the 72 version will have a plastic cover over the cables that must be removed first to access the belt cover as seen in the pics below. This cover is held in place by the screws that attach the side aprons to the seat bottom.

I have a 1970 assuming it hadn’t been changed. Thanks for the information.
