I need a new alternator

Do any of you knowledgeable Oldsmobile experts know which alternator My 1964 Oldsmobile 98 have been fitted with??

It is the original ext regulated alternator. I have looked for stamped numbers and so, but cant find anything thats tells me what alternator it is. I have looked in the service manual, but cant anything I understand.

I guess RockAuto could supplie a new one together with my new purchase.

Any help is much appriciated.... Thanks

It should be a typical GM 10DN alternator. Reman units normally have smudged, removed, or no stampings like the original units.

Rock Auto has a selection of reman replacements.

Now, if you want a numbers-matching replacement for originality, place a parts wanted ad and see what shows up. I'm sure someone on here has an original application list for your car.

Just out of curiosity, what numbers "match" on an alternator. I'm sure you mean "correct" and proper date code, but unlike VIN derivative stamps that prove originality of a block or trans case, there's no such thing as a "numbers matching" alternator. The difference is that there will be thousands of potentially correct alternators, but only one original numbers matching block.

If I should be tempted to go for a more than 55Amp alternator, and still a DN10 as you say is the correct one, which cars would have like a 60-70Amp alternator fitted??

The 1972 Olds Ninety Eights used a 10DN style (external regulator) alternator rated at 63 amps. It will bolt in place of your current one. RockAuto sells version with a one-groove and a two-groove pulley.

Thank you sir... Very very nice. I did try searching RockAuto, I didnt have any luck. I do not think the RockAuto parts search function works very well.
