Factory AM/FM Radio Install
Factory AM/FM Radio Install
Hello, I'm installing a factory GM am/fm radio in my 71 Cutlass. It Currently has a factory AM radio in it. I am putting two speakers in the rear package tray. What would I need to get the FM radio working? I have heard I might need an amp, but am not sure.
Also, If anyone has a factory AM/FM radio they are selling, I am looking.
Thanks,
Swardins

The 1970 Factory AM/FM Oldsmobile radios came in two-parts. Part #1 was the Receiver that you see sticking out of the dash. The second part was the stereo multiplexor for the second channel hidden above the glove box.
The 2-box radios are hard to install.
In 1971 the Factory AM/FM Oldsmobile radio had matured into 1 box.
The 1 box radios are very easy to install.
Just make sure you use real 8-ohm speakers designed for low wattage of 5 watts per channel.
A used 1970 or 1971 working radio AM/FM may cost between $200 - $400.
A brand new Clone with 40 watts per channel will cost just under $600.
I think the next time I convert a Cutlass to AM/FM, I will use a clone.
