Power Brake Booster Removal - Tips?
Power Brake Booster Removal - Tips?
I'm going to get my booster rebuilt by Booster Dewey so I have to remove it. (1963 Starfire with Moraine booster) The FSM is typically brief in their description so I'm asking for advice from anyone who has actually done this. I've removed the hood and plan to remove the wiper motor for detailing but it looks like the speedometer cable is in the way. Is it possible to remove it without disconnecting the master cylinder hydraulic line? I would appreciate any tips, thanks.
It's better not to bend the hydraulic lines as that can fatigue them, so in my opinion you can't do it without removing the master from the lines....safely.
If the master is old, this would be a good time to replace/rebuild it as well, or at least have it inspected. You can never be too safe when it comes to brakes.
The M/C line is designed to allow you to remove the booster without disconnecting the hydraulic line. Fatigue of metal requires many cycles, not one. Obviously don't bend the line to the point that it takes a permanent bend, but simply moving it out of the way won't hurt anything. If the line is rusted and yields during this process, it needed to be replaced anyway.
Thanks Randy, I agree about brake safety, I can't believe some of the things I've seen on cars that others don't seem to care about. My master is new so that should be ok.
Thanks Joe, I will probably try to move it. Looking at it again I may have to remove one of the power steering hoses for clearance.
What about the speedometer cable, does that have to be removed?

Rob, I don't know, there are quite a few differences from 62 to 63.
Just wanted to let you all know, the booster is off. I did go ahead and remove the master cylinder and the line to the distribution block, with that out of the way the booster removal was easy. You can follow the rest of the story on my progress thread:
