If they came out of a type O rear end than their Oldsmobile axles. Olds is the only one who used the Type O rear ends. I don't know why they have different numbers, but if they're both 28 spline they must be from a 1969 or 1970. The 1967 and 68 3.91 gears used 31 spline axles. If this doesn't answer your question then please add more to your post so we know exactly what your looking for. John

I haven't ever paid attention to the shaft numbers so I can't help with that. Do you know what rear these came out of?
All year O-Types had 28 spline axle shafts, the rears with under 3.42 ratio were standard duty (as opposed to heavy duty) and used 28 spline axle shafts. 1970 was different as all ratios used 28 spline shaft axles.

The O axle used two different bearings and seals through its short run, And I think the vista wagons had an even larger axle shaft diameter and thus different bearing ID. If they were my axles, I would want to measure the axle surface where it rides on the bearing...and see if that dimension leads to possible answers.
Are the old bearings and seals laying around near by....?
This page at super cars unlimited is worth the read if you haven't seen it.

Yes, the 67-69 rears used sealed bearings with an oil seal pressed into the end of the axle tube. The 1970 version used an open taper bearing with the oil seal sandwiched between the bearing and the axle retainer flange, same as the 71-up corporate 10 bolt rears.

What I'm saying is there were 28 spline shafts in all years of production. Only the 3.42-up rears in 1967-1968 had 31 spline shafts. The 3.23-down rears had 28 spline shafts.

OK gang, i got the scoop on the axle # numbers, i called Greg from supercars unlimited, he told me those numbers are just foundry # numbers like where they were made etc etc, even day shift or evening shift, he said as long as they measure correctly and have the correct number of splines your in business, even though mine or 2 different numbers he said that still could happen but it is a 50 year old rear end and somebody along the line could have changed one, so that's the scoop !! john....
