axle identification ??
Hi, i went out to my brothers house to pick up what i thought were a couple of 12 bolt 28 spline axles, i know these run from 1967-early 70 like the ones that i have, he said he pulled these out of a 1970 12 bolt Oldsmobile 442 they look to be like the ones i see on supercars unlimited for the 1970 model year last year for the 12 bolt olds, can anybody out there tell me what these are, here are some pics, the first 3 pics are the ones i don't know what they are, the bottom one is my 12 bolt axle, thanks john !!!

The "unknown" images show axle shafts with Timken Set9 type bearings (missing the outer races) and pressed on oil seals that are used on the 70 O-Type shafts, so that matches up to what you were told. Be aware that the 71-up corporate 10 bolt shafts use the same bearings and seals and are 28 spline as well, but the spline angle is different than the O-Type shafts.
The last photo is a 67-69 axle shaft with a sealed bearing. Those use an oil seal that is pressed into the end of the axle tube. These shafts are not interchangeable with the 1970 style.

Just for information, the 66/67 B/P 10 bolt axles are the same as the 66-69 O type.

Axle shafts
The 10 bolt 8.5 will have the same looking axles as the 12 bolt olds 1970 also BUT will have a different spline pitch.
Pontiac axles will interchange with the 12 bolt olds as stated 1966-1969 29 3/4" long
the 1970 olds 12 bolt cover 10 bolt ring can use axles from the 1970 -1972 Pontiac GTO Lemans T37 rears and late firebirds had oiled bearing axles also all from 100 bolt 8.2
Even66 - 69 BUICK Lark NON GS 10 bolt 8.25 rear have the same axles as 10 bolt Pontiac in the same year era changes. In 1970 even the GS used the oiled bearing setup .
Just more info for other to search and use.
