pinion seal change 52 olds
1948 - 1952 Olds Pinion Seal
I sell them all the time -- and unless you are doing more -- i.e. the whole rear end, axle bearings & seals, differential and pinion bearings & races, etc. -- the pinion seal can be replaced by itself..... the two tiered rear axle seals are getting low on supply, high on demand (they fit '39 - '54 Olds & Pontiac) and always leak also... the repro is pathetic, to be nice...

Even if it uses a crush sleeve, it can be replaced.
Clean the nut, pinion stem, companion flange recess.
Put a paint stripe across one side of the stem, the nut, onto the flange.
Using the end of vernier calipers, measure the distance from the end of the stem to the beginning of the nut. Use a tool like a piece of 2x2 angle with holes to put two bolts into the companion flange.
Remove nut, flange, seal.
Install new seal, RTV on outside of seal, moly cam Tighten the nut just a hair beyond where it was, using the paint stripe as a guide, and the verniers to be sure you aren't a whole thread off in tightness.
