Hi from New Zealand! Well I got the oil and filter sorted but when I crawled under my recently purchased 1965 Cutlass Sports Coupe with the 330 V8 I found that the engines oil sump plug is like no other I have seen. It is round and has what I think of as sun like with many small triangles sticking out. The tool or socket fits into this internal shape to remove the sump plug. Any idea what it is and where I could obtain the socket/tool?

 

That type of plug was factory in that era and when you take it out be careful because alot of oil comes out fast. Have read that there was a factory tool for this although I have never actually seen one. Have used a 1/2" square drive ratchet or breaker bar without an extension or socket, just the 1/2" square into the plug with great success on this style plug.

I have one of those 8-pt tools, by Bonney I think, but can't find the photo of it.

It appears to be a double square tool. Note that the points are all 90 degrees.
There are other 8-pt designs with different angled points.

 

A 1/2" square drive should work. Just be aware that most 1/2" extensions have rounded ends and corners that might cam out of the plug recess.

 

In that event, you may fabricate a tool from a short pc of 1/2" square stock and a 12-pt socket that fits it properly.

 

I haven't had the chance to try the 1/2" drive head idea but the plug on my car looks nothing like the one's that have been pictured. It has maybe 30-40 small points radiating out in a circular fashion. It may well be that the correct tool doesn't "fill" all of the triangular bits so I will have another go and try the 1/2" drive but I wonder why Old's would create something more complicated than it needs to be. O.K I can here the laughter already!

I have a Bonney A 650 socket that a friend got for me on the internet. Before that I was using a 14 mm Mac tool Hex socket.

Awesome use of modern technology on old technology! You were quite right, when I got back under the car in better light and the car jacked higher The sump plug is as you have shown and the 1/2 inch drive worked a treat. Thanks for your help.Cheers
