72 cutlass built in CA Question

the cat i got (well still have to pick up) from Scott 442 is a California built car. was this just an assembly plant or did they make there own body panels and every thing. just not sure that i ever messed with a CA built car. I'm sure that there will be some little differences in the assembly and some finish from one built from a differant plant. does anyone know of any differences in a car built there from one built from anywhere else?

I don't believe CA was using EGR, catylitic converters, or AIR injection in 72. It might have different jets in the carburetor. I don't believe there would be any differences in the body.

I've had 70-72 cars from Fremont, CA as well as Lansing, Linden and Arlington and haven't noticed any major differences in any of them other than build sheet availability/location. My Arlington '72s had a lot more red oxide primer visible than the others.

Hope that baby purrs like a kitten. Yeah, I know its just a typo. But it sure was a good intro line.

As far as 72 emissions? I believe that 73 was the year that GM hit the market with pollution controls. The most you might find on a 72 is an EGR and the Fuel vapor cannister on the passenger front side.

Congrats on your new ride. Here's the obligatory: Please post pics.

i will be getting on a plane in the morning to fly down and pick it up. me and a couple buddies were going to drive down and trailer it home but all heck broke loose at work and the other two guys can't get off. the bad thing is that i am the one that had to make them stay. after i got it all planed out to drive down with them as friends i had to tell them i can't let them off work. what a screwed up mess.

scott 442 posted pictures of it on a couple threads.

Now I remember the car!! Very nice buy. Too bad about work.

So, are you getting it with the "clear" or "amber" front signal lenses, or both? Scott 442 sort of threw out the challenge as to what car they came from and I said 70-71 Vega. Never heard back on that so I gotta be right Also, that 2GC carb has to go. Had one on my car before it was swapped out. It was constantly in need of help. It had a horrible time with the choke.

Overall though I think you're going to be really happy with this beast. It looks really like a survivor. When you get it back, I'd like to know how the vinyl and trim are; like are they fantastic or is there a lot of rust hidden there? A new back bumper and this car's ready for a local show!

Oldsmobiles were built in Australia from the late teens, '20's, '30's and '40's which included a truck line.

Keep in mind that just because a car was BUILT in Calif doesn't mean that it has CA emissions equipment. Cars SOLD in CA had to comply with the requirements. Cars built in CA and sold elsewhere did not. Some 1972 CA cars came with EGR for an example, but this was not a federal requirement until the 1973 model year. A.I.R. was required on 1966-67 Oldsmobiles sold in CA, but not elsewhere.
