Promlems to install boot since pinchweld is too low
Promlems to install boot since pinchweld is too low
Hi,
on my 1969 Cutlass conv. I can't install the boot with the plastic to slide underneath. Reason is the pinchweld, on the driver side everything is okay, but on the passenger side, the pinchweld is almost sitting on the body, and it seems like glued, to the body. So I was told to get clips, but I am not able to install either, because once the clips are attached to the boot, I can't snag them on. So I wonder what do to the get the pinchweld a bit up, so I can slide the plastic underneath. Any help is welcome.
Thank you,
Tom

I don't know about verts newer than '69, but the pinchweld in both my '68 and '69 verts attaches the same way. See the Fusick catalog, part number D3685. There are supposed to be around nine or so of those clips that fasten around the perimeter of the well opening with a single screw. In reality, though, when I took both my '68 (Lansing car) and my '69 (Fremont car) apart, each only had 5 clips. Once those clips are in place, the pinchweld snaps in place over the clips.
I know on my '68 it didn't look like there would be enough room to slide the thin plastic pieces under the pinchweld (especially on the passenger side) but it all goes in. I had a little trouble at first with it coming out on the driver side but that problem went away once I stretched the boot through normal use.
The book says that some sort of sealant is supposed to go on under the pinchweld before you snap it in place. I didn't do that with mine. The car never gets wet, anyway.
I don't know how to solve the problem of not being able to get the plastic pieces under the pinchweld.
